I thought it would be interesting for people to list things that they're not a fan of seeing in pool cues.

This is not meant to insult somebody else's work or taste. This is just things that you may not be a big fan of. We each have our own specific tastes and styles that we enjoy.

I'll start.

I'm not a fan of Purple Heart wood and I'm not a fan of floating points.

I don't like floating points either but I love purpleheart.

I used to love seeing ivory on a pool cue, now it makes me cringe a little bit. And I like ringwork, I don't like cues without any ring work. And straight grain maple is a bit boring for my taste. Also simple floating points.

What I have observed regarding cue designs and materials is that what is totally offensive to one person is loved by another . The responses here already are beginning to reveal this. Somebody here likes Purpleheart- I think it is the ugliest wood on pool cues and of about 150 cues that I have owned - not one had that wood -I have the same dislike for bright color stone inlays as mentioned above by others- my personal favorites for inlay material are genuine pearl or ivory-- simply from a " what I like" perspective- your environmental and animal rights issues aside.

I’ll include personal distain for floating points/ rounded points as well. Personally I do not like dark color linen or any leather / exotic skin wraps either - the only cue that I enjoy with a leather wrap is the original Willie Hoppe cues with the smooth leather wrap-- White linen wraps with either green, brown or black specks- depending on the forearm and point woods is the only way to go for me- regarding wrapped cues.

I also don't care for turquoise.
I'm not a fan of cues with multiple dark woods. I like to see a contrast in the woods. Multiple woods can also distract to me. 2 woods are usually enough for me

Don’t care...reverse points on the butt sleeve.

Interesting. I've always seen the reverse points that mimic the forearm points as adding an element of balance to the overall look of the cue. Would you mind providing a bit more explanation as to why you don't like them?

Biggest pet peeve in cue building is anyone that doesn't have a mind creative enough to do anything for their own design.
Stop copying the SW cue design and calling it your cue.
They call it "a tribute"....I call it bullsh!t.
Work on getting a creative bone in your own body and stop copying other peoples specific ideas.

edit: PH is a great cue wood if used in the right places ;)

I'll second the complete disdain for Reverse points- goes to show you how people's tastes can be polar opposites-- I think that reverse points make any cue look completely awkward- like 4 lines just hanging down towards the wrap area- just dangling there- give me points straight up to the sky any day ! The only reverse pointed cues that I have some like for are the 1970s ADAM Century cue and the 1970s Gus Szamboti forearm model J Palmer - in both cases- the normally empty forearm space is occupied by either another set of straight up points ( Adam Century) or Pearl dot and notched diamond inlays- Palmer Model J.

I think we have different interpretations of what he was talking about. I was reading that he didn't like points on the butt-sleeve like these, which are short versions of the ones in the forearm:
