Pool cue help

So I've been playing pool about 6-12 months, I'd play before but that was the odd time at the mall on those ghetto tables. Now I play regularly, try to get out once a week ATLEAST, when my mom's boyfriend gets home( my pool buddy) we play almost everyday if my dad isn't in town that month. So thats about 2-4 times every 2 weeks, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Now I went down to a local billiard / sports shop, about 6 months ago and bought a cheap 50-75$ cue, just to get me started. I believe the brand is samurai. I think it's a 20/21 Oz, but not 100% sure on the true weight.

Now my cue is a bit warped at the end, seems to bend off a bit, most likely because I've been breaking with it lately.

Now my question is would it work to buy another cue, a bit of a better / more expensive one, use that for shooting, and use my current cue as a breaking cue? Or would I be better off to buy a breaking cue and use my current cue for shooting?

I don't know any good pool cue brands for about 100-150$, so any suggestions would be nice, preferably heavier like 20 Oz or so, I like my cues to be heavy. I will NOT be orded off an internet shop, as I don't have a credit card, but I live in edmonton and a local shop is

I'm sure there are but theres a lot of hot tub places that also sell cues and tables, not to sure how good the cues are though.

Check out the local pawn shops. Till I saw you don't have a credit card I was going to point you towards eBay. Do you have a bank account? If so you can still start up a PayPal account and search through eBay.

First off, lose the attitude, you came here asking for help.
When buying a cue, you can get a decent cue for 100-150 like a Viking or McDermott etc. Good quality cues, and will last you a long time.
Remember when buying cues in the 30-50 range, you get what you pay for.

Some do some dont. most cues i see at pawn shops are terrible cues, but have seen some good ones for cheap. If youre lookming for a good cue, avoid a hot tub store. Ask in the wanted/for sale area and see what people hve available. you can get a nice sneaky pete from a decent cue maker for under $200 US, and other cues like McDermotts for just as cheap. read some of the reviews and decide what you want. You can pay for the cues with paypal, mail a money order, or maybe theres another member in Edmonton whod get it for you nd you can pay him.

The best value youll get is a used cue from this site usually. Use that other cue as a breaker and buy a good cue for playing. Also, void any gimmick cues like laser sights and shit like that, or fibreglass, titanium.... Just get a nice wood cue. You cant go wrong with a McDermott though.

If you see a cue on ebay, you dont always need a credit card. You can ask the seller if you can send them a money order or cheque.

Do you know what kind of joint you got on that cue?

Maybe you can buy a performance shaft like OB1 and you can use it to play and break. And would be in your budget. OB1 is something even the pros use.

Or i got a couple of shafts lying around that i send to you to use then you can save a bit more money to get something decent. I reckon about $300. If you are really passionate about the game, that money will probably come easily in 1 or 2 pool tourney in your local pubs.

Also if you are looking to buy something you can try the wanted for sale section. The guys there always has got something to sell at any budget!!
 
When ! started playing pool again after a long lay-off,I was told to try a Players cue to start off with till I decided if I was going to stay with the sport agian. I bought a new Players S-pec with the 5 inch extending butt,this was like five years ago and I paid about a $100 for it and it was a great playing cue for the money, There are hundreds of different Players cues now with piloted joints from $60 to $160. Yes, pawnshops carry both good and bad cues. I saw a jacoby offered by a local pawn shop on ebay. So, went to the shop, handled the cue BEFORE I bid. Knowing the cue was nice, I bid away. Got a very nice cue for $225...it must have retailed for 3 times that new. So, bargains are out there...you just have to hunt for them. Do diligent research...know which brands are good before you begin.
 
the cue is cheap and is going to probably suck regardless of the shaft due to the joint facings not being perfect and that will make the cue roll funny. i would go on the forums and post a wtb cue from 100-150 range. they will send you pictures and give u plenty to choose from. and you will be getting a better cue for the money.

also if your new to the game which it sounds you are pawn shops will be a guessing game. you may end up just buying another horrible cue. almost every cue on here will be high enough quality for your playing ability and beyone. Shane van boening plays with a 10+ year old joss shaft on a schon cue and he is a world champion. so get an old joss or and if u really want to feel pro ask about predator and ob shafts. they will fit your new cue and you wont have to match it up to a poor quality cue.

remember. the tip is the most important part of the cue. then the shaft, then the joint, and the butt could be made out of pvc filled with gummy bears and it would still hit like a champ. not really but u know what i mean

Not any more. Checks and money orders are not allowed. My wife and I spent days changing our listings to reflect that. Any listings stating checks or money orders would not even be allowed to show up after a certain date. You might be able to do this with a seller, but it's now against Ebay policy because of the counterfeiting of money orders, which has become a real problem recently.
Policy allows PayPal, ProPay, and if you accept credit/debit cards yourself.

Suggestion

1) Save up your money, will need $150-220 bucks.
2) Go to a well known Pool room (no bars) that has a Pro shop.
3) Talk to the owner or at least the manager about the cues they offer.
4) Tell him/her what you like in a cue, and your price range.
5) Get 2-3 recommendations from him/her.
6) Try them out if you can hitting a few balls.
7) Pick the one you like the best, and buy it.

Don't really worry about a Break cue until you get much better.
Lucasi has some good cues in the $200 range, and they are pretty good.

btw your cue will not warp from breaking. leaving it in a car. leaning it on a wall with warp it. also the cheap cues are made too fast to stay perfect

Yup, both are good cues, even in the low price range.

This is excellent advice. For $150, you can buy an OB or Predator shaft and turn your cheap cue into a weapon.

Otherwise, a McDermott or a Viking are very good choices. Except for the fact that you'll want to buy an OB or Predator shaft for them as well. :D

If it were me, I'd buy a new shaft and try not to gloat when I win with it.
 
dont worry about predator shafts or OB1/2 shafts. A lot of it is marketing bullshit. A decent cuemakers shafts are just as good if not better than these "performance" shafts. A lot of people think all the pros use predator shafts, but most do not. You can play just as good with a McDermott shaft as with an OB1.

True. I am used to my McDermott cue, and shoot well with it.

But you can't say that a Predator or OB shaft does not make a difference....
