Jack Justis was a well known cue case maker and fishing rod builder. He passed away in 2023. If you are already wrapping rods I think that you know why nobody is doing it,, it looks very difficult & time consuming. If you get one done post it here.

I’ve been asked many times, why don’t you try a full wrap on a cue?

My initial thought was to try something on like this wrapless PS2 butt I own. I would totally rock that, keep the wrapless feel but do a suttle white/blue/black full wrap on something like this.

Not sure if thread finish, like what you would turn on a rod would work or if it would need to be spray coated. I personally would what that wrapless feel/finish…….

I have no idea what finish is used on fishing rods but it must be durable as hell. There are a variety of cue finishes, I wouldn't doubt the same finish has been used somewhere, sometimes at least.

As JasonATX said I have done a few of these and they turn out well. Normally thread work is more busy or flashy so the hard part is making it nice and clean and not letting it get too crazy. Except when the customer wants crazy. The green half dragon was my first one and was on a junker break cue. I’ve also used some abalone shell as in the second photo. Nice and clean pinwheels, and the black n blue is the one on the desk right now, will be a closed and faded chevron pattern.

Nice work, to say the least. Looks killer…. Would be a hell of a lot easier if I just sent one to you to do. Lol

I’m not planning to do these for anyone, was just curious as to why you don’t see much thread designs used in cues. I think there is a huge market for it if it was done correctly. I know there is for custom rod (fishing) designs. I’ve been slammed for years but it’s not fun when you are so backed up with business. It’s not a money thing for me…….

One question, for those you have completed, did you use thread finish and roll the cue like we do for rods?

While the skill and planning is obvious, I haven't seen one that isn't way too gaudy for my taste.

I think the art lends itself to rods more than cues for a couple of reasons. First, the smaller diameter means that the work will look intricate without being gaudy. Second, the colored thread is already used to hold the guides on the rod, so it is a natural progression of a necessary component of the build.

As I said, they are nicely done, but too much for my taste.

Mako and I need to figure out a design, but I have a plain maroon Lucasi that I'm thinking that I want these kinds of colors similar to flame veneers in a shape similar to 8 points. If any of you have a different/better suggestion, I'd love to hear it.

Few years ago, a good buddy of mine passed away and I built a bobber rod for myself in his memory. He was a huge Pink Floyd fan and this wrap actually went viral when I posted it online in the fishing community.

This rod has been magical to me and is my number 1 (confidence wise) when on the rivers.

It also glued in beautifully on a black blank and that’s where my cue idea started ever since.

As I mentioned above, I think this would be pimp, on a black wrapless butt if done right. I shoot that Predator Sport 2 with a Black (V4) CF shaft from Jacoby.
