Pool Etiquette

Jay,

You could have avoided your incident, if you asked the two to move before they got started.

It got to you didn't it? any reaction can be perceived as an over reaction.

Next time just ask them to move to another table. Politely of course.

What's up, Tom?
I think pool is more like Oxycontin. The more I play One Pocket the number I get.

Tom - I could have asked them to move but since I don't own the Pool Room I didn't think it was my place to do so. I'm a paying customer just like they were. It wouldn't have bothered me that they were there if they had not been interfering with our game.

I think the shooters on the next table were not players but recreational shooters and therefore probably don't have any clear understanding of the niceties of our sport. Chalk it up to just one bad experience and don't let it color your love of the game.

I read your posts and would like to domment but don't know where to do so. This forum doesn't appear to the be proper place.

Sadly, this is on the owner/manager/counter person. The place I played in for over twenty years in NY.....the owner asked where the customers wanted to play and for years she let them play wherever they wanted, including next to high stakes money games, etc. She got better about it eventually but it took way too many years. I've also seen, in the same room, spectators harassing players who were playing for money, babies howling at the top of their lungs, you wouldn't believe some of the stuff I've seen over the years. Most casual players know nothing of pool etiquette and most don't care.

When I frequented pool halls 20 years ago, we always had a couple of tables in the back that we used for "wink wink" money games and tried to keep the casual players up front by the door. I can't believe anybody needs to be asked not to lean on your table. As for the cell phone and talking loud, practice ignoring it. If distractions bother you, have your buddies shark you till you don't notice it. I haven't played a lot recently but it is still a place with alcohol, loud music and people. Practice and focus will overcome distractions and a@#$#@les. Good luck. John

Pushout hit the nail on the head.

Seems like they were just recreational players. Ones with bad manners at that. Should be common sense not to sit on a table where people are playing.
