I'll admit it...sometimes I just don't get it......there's some parts of the movies, "The Hustler" and "Color of Money" I don't understand....1st, in the Hustler, what is it that Geo.C.Scott's character does to Piper Laurie's character to induce her to commit suicide? 2nd, In C.O.M., why does Forest Whitaker's character ask Eddie Felson (after he's just hustled him) whether he needs to lose some weight? Is that weight as in pounds, or as in a handicapping spot? The last question for you astute film afficianados (sp?)
is....what does the title of the film (C.O.M.) have to do with the story or the movie??

First of all, Scott's character is a guy who knows how to pull people's strings, and knows how to get what he wants.

His deal was that he saw Piper's character might have more influence over Fast Eddie than he did. He didn't want that. He knew she had very low self esteem, and took advantage of that. After "taking advantage" of her, he acted to make her feel even more worthless. She was hanging by a thread as an alcoholic gimp anyways, so this pushed her over the edge. It's been a while since I saw the movie, but didn't he mention something to her about Eddie being ready to leave her or something? Or that Eddie could do better than her? Whatever it was, it was a lie designed to drive her away, and she just happened to kill herself. I don't think his intention was to induce suicide.. Just to make her leave. If she left, Eddie would be easier to manage and take advantage of.

The "Do I need to lose some weight?" Line was probably a double entendre (sp?) about both Whittaker's character's weight, and the fact that he was a better player than Eddie. Hence, a better player should either be "giving weight" or at the very least, not taking weight. Simply a humorous statement that showed Eddie he was outclassed on the table.

The title? Come on, man.. Yer killing me. Playing pool for money. Money is green. Hence, The Color of Money. So, an artistic statement that pool is about the "green".

But you knew this one yourself.

Here's another one in the Hustler; after Eddie gets his thumbs broken and is in a cast, how the hell did he get his sweater on?

I thought Piper's character helped him get dressed.

]By deception, he makes her realize she's a loser and that any hope she had with Eddie was dashed by Eddie's blind greed and penchant for losing money.

Remember that before she and Eddie go together, she was already heading toward (and firmly planted in) Loserville. Eddie's uncaring rejection for the pursuit of recouping losses showed her that she really wasn't all that important to him, and that like money, he had no problem casting it away. So back to and through Loserville she went.

Bert just pushed those deep-seated buttons through manipulation. By sleeping with Bert and then killing herself, she punishes Eddie in the only way that would make an impact on him.

The color of money is green. Money is the root of all evil. And green is the color of envy and jealousy. It also represents the opposite of a seasoned veteran. Choose your cliché.

Ahh you all are wrong... In the book written by Tevis there is a conversation between eddie and fats and they talk about th baize they play on and its color is green, like the Color of Money.

By the way so I don't have to do a reply later baize is another word for table felt or cloth.

I think she kills herself cause she secretly thought he was such super stud with his ruthless and wicked ways which MAJORLY turned her on, and then found out he sucked in the sack SO BAD, that she just couldn't take it anymore and ended it all.
