daydreaming about pool

The Golf channel is doing some sort of exhibition this week. They have matched up some great pool players vs some pro golfers. I haven't seen the official details anywhere but from what I heard the pool players are playing a round of golf against the pro golfer and then they are taking it back to the pool hall where they will play some pool. (probably nine or tenball).

The pool room portion of this goes down tonite at 9pm, Monday Oct 23rd in Miami at Sharpshooters Billiards. The pool player list includes:
Gabe Owen
Mike Sigel
Corey Duel
Shawn Putnam
Earl Strickland
Troy Frank

You can call the pool room at 305-596-0588 to get some details. I dont think there is an entry fee to watch.
This event is going to be filmed and will be shown later on the Golf Channel I think.

Got a call with some more details on this. Apparently the format they are going to use is some sort of straight pool hybrid where its a race to 75 and I was told it would be done scotch doubles type format.

The 6 golf players are national level players but apparently are NOT folks like VJ or Tiger. National level players but not the premier golfers. Hopefully they have picked some golfers that can make a ball or two because the pool players play a little golf. I think Corey shoots in the 80s.

I read in a small article in Golf Digest that golfer Tim Clark from South Africa owns a GC and likes to play a lot. I haven't heard anything about who else on tour plays the game.

That's why MS was at the room practicing last Friday........ it wasn't for Chicago then.

I was there last night. I pulled up to Sharpshooters at 9pm and the parking lot was packed. Into the room and the second I walk in its like a whos who of Miami players. Just about everyone that runs out even a little bit in Miami was there last night.

The Golf Channel had four tables set aside with tables closed off around the four. Effectively, half the room was being used by them. On the front table Sigel and a golfer were player partners against Duel and another golfer. The format they used was interesting. Rack 15 balls, break em wide open and shoot any ball in any order, alternating shots between the pool player and the golfer. Each team shot until their rack of 15 was finished and the scorekeeper kept track of the number of shots it took to finish the rack. Each team shot 5 racks with a lowest potential score of 75 "strokes". A par 75 pool course so to speak. Single elimination.

There might have been money involved but honestly it looked to me like the players were just having fun. In between shots there was alot of talking and yukking it up. Sigel especially took the opportunity to pick out his yes man (Randy Epperson or Big Randy as he is called in South Florida) and then give a running commentary to Randy on every shot, every miss.

The pool itself was rather boring but the atmosphere and unique nature of the event made it very interesting. After a while the novelty wore off and I snagged a signature of Sigel on "The RoadRunners" poster I have and I took off. Didnt even see the end of the first round of matches.
