Pool hall in Bloomington, IL?

I'm going to be in Bloomington, IL for a couple of days in a couple of weeks. I'd like to know if there are any pool halls in this town? It seems pretty small, so it might be a shot in the dark.

Thanks in advance,

Shayla :D

It's called Ride the Nine, just off Veteren's Parkway. Monday night's they have an open tournament on eight footers, race to four nine ball, DE. There are some pretty decent players and you can usually find action. They have 9 footers and bar boxes as well.

Mike Dunklin - thin black guy, maybe in his forties, talks a little funny. You'll know him when you see him. Likes to gamble, but he was taught how to gamble by the Fatman himself. In other words, if he likes the game, you probably won't.

Bobby McGrath - early twenties, white kid. Kinda quiet. I thought he was a cocky SOB when I first saw him, but turns out he's one of the nicer players I've met with that much talent, and he's got that much talent.

Fat Nate - Good action. Thinks he's a world beater and he's always got cash. Like I said, THINKS he's a world beater. Basically a gambler's dream matchup. Gets awfully salty though when he loses. careful with this one.

There are a few others. Talk to Gary, older guy with suspenders that hangs out in the afternoons or early evenings. He'll point you in the right direction if he likes you. If you do see him, tell him Kevin from Arizona says hello.

Wheelchair Tony can also steer you right.

Also, bank ring games in the afternoons. Don't be fooled though. They ain't too strong in 9 ball, but banks is a whole different ballgame. Nice guys though.

I played there all last summer and got to know a few of those cats.

How's that for a scouting report?

Wow! Thanks for the info! I'll be there on a Tuesday and Wednesday night. Too bad I'll miss the Monday night tournament. I'll definitely be taking my cue, though. :)

Wow, what a great report there Reno. He's pointed you in the right direction Shayla. My family used to own Ride the Nine. It is a nice place with nice people. It's pretty cheap to practice on good equipment. There is every size table and a large bar with live entertainment. I think it will be karaoke night when you are there. Not sure if that is your kind of thing. No worry about it interfering with your practice if you don't like it. The bar and pool room are seperated. The food is pretty good too.

Have fun,
Sarah

Kevin,
You got it almost right. You want to listen to Tony and PLAY Gary. :) You're right about Dunklin, too. That is one tough game.

You and I never got a chance to match up. Will you be back this way?

Don't get me wrong Longhair, Gary made a few donations to the Reno Foundation. Aren't you the cat that I used to beat up on down at EIU back in the day?

That's me. Maybe you can still beat up on me but it'll be a little harder now. I think the pool scene down there is pretty thin these days. Mattoon is strong, Charleston is dead.

Like I said, I was in Peoria / Bloomington all last summer and my only regret is not going back down to Brian's Place in Mattoon to get the big payback. I played there and Stix (Charleston) when I first started and I made plenty of donations at Brian's Place. I made my bones, as they say. Tough action though. Not tough in winning the cash, but tough as in getting out the door with the cash. If there's anything those hillbillies don't like, it's a clean cut kid that cleans their clock. It's probably all for the best. More than likely I would have gotten beat down again. I just would have loved to see the look on their faces. I remember seeing Jack Thompson (from Mattoon) at the US Amateur in Vegas in '99. I watched one of his matches (he didn't recognize me of course), and I had flashbacks of how cocky that dude was back in the day. After seeing him in Vegas I probably could have given him the 7,8. Oh well, like I said, at least I didn't get beat down again.
