It depends on what you're rated in the AZ ratings system. If you're a 9 or over, forget it, there are very few tournaments you can even play in. If you're an 8 or under, you can play in a tournament just about every night of the week. As far as action, there is very little. I think there are some people who will play a little in the day time at Shooters on 35th Ave. and Peoria. I hear that there is also some day time action at the Rack and Q in Tempe on Apache between Rural and McClintock.

Visited Phoenix a couple of years ago (First year of the Diamondbacks) and there was a Clicks Billiards in the area. Don't know if it still exists but you could ask around.

Rumour has it Kolby's is closed although I haven't checked it out for myself....I play at Clicks in Pheonix on Thomas. Also Main Street in Mesa has tourneys damn near every night. Good Luck!

I wonder why would anyone spread a "rumour" that may or may not be true?
Wouldn't it be easier to dial 480-829-7344 and ask, than to take the time to post false rumours here?

Kolbys was closed for a day or so. I believe they are changing owners right now. But they are definitely open.

Hey Jimmy, looks like Trace from Kolbys is the new tournament director at The Sets. Should be interesting to see how that goes.

I just heard the news tonight. I heard that the owners of Metro Sports Bar bought Kolby's. Apparently, they are going to put in all new G.C. IV's and, if what I'm hearing is true, they're even going to tighten the pockets up. That is a small miracle for Arizona! I am told they recovered all of the bar tables already, and the 9 footers should be getting recovered soon. I don't know how long until the G.C. IV's are brought in. They're also going to put a full bar in there. I guess they only kept one person from the original staff.

Any word on who the tourney director will be?

Man, there are all kinds of changes going on right now. Pappys sold. Kolby's sold. Northern Lounge sold.

Who bought Pappy's?

My understanding is that it is the pair who used to own the Cypress Lounge. Havn't heard much more about it though.

You heard that Larry Eans and his father Marty bought The Northern Lounge?

I talked to Marty yesterday, and he said it's a done deal except for finalizing some money details. Should be a good place for bar shooters to hang out.

thanks everyone i will go and check these places out,and maybe i will even see you there :D

I lived in Phoenix for about two years. After living in WI and playing tournaments in the MN, WI, and IL area I was really disappointed. There is no incentive for any players to get better. I played in the biggest tournament that AZ had ever had and it was 110 players, not very impressive. There are about 10 good players in the area (not that I am a world beater) and you would think there would be more for around 3 million people. Unless they do away with the ratings comittee and give players an incentive to get better, it will be tough for a true champion to come out of that area unless they move there from another area. Just my opinion......

Don't worry, "your opinions" are facts as far as I'm concerned. Most room owners don't want to hear it though, and the ratings comittee has a strangle hold on pool in Arizona. It's really pathetic.

I was forced into a rating myself and am not fond of it but I was curious why a rating would stop anyone from being a champion. A high rated player can play any open tourney and match up with anyone he wants one on one. The rating just keep him from playing in a weaker tourney.

The reason why no champion will come out of there is that everyone tries to keep their handicap low so they can keep playing in the tournaments that are making them cash. There are a lot of tournaments for the lower players and very few for the better players. Everyone rated 8 and below are so fixated on their ratings, they don't try to get better. Why should they? Nothing to gain.

Jimmy M - I think that I met you at Pooch's when I lived out there when Dave Hemmah was working there.

Probably. I wasn't playing a whole lot then, but started going down there once in a while and hitting balls when they took the place over.

P.S. The picture in my posts was taken at Pooch's.
