Pool Halls in Chicago?

I just moved to Chicago and was wondering about the pool halls here...

I am living in downtown Chicago right next to the John Hancock building so I was hoping for a few places around this area if possible. I looked some up on the internet and I noticed a few around here but I need the 411!

I am looking for a place where I can practice somewhat cheaply for a few hours and then being able to find a game afterwards...

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!

Justin

p.s. of course I will head over to where they filmed The color of money! How is that place?

when you find a pool hall that's one thing..But keep asking around where you should and shouldn't go for your own safety...good luck in playing....

Since you are downtown...

The place to go is Chris's Billiards. Many great players go there. You might even see George Fels there. Great author of some fantastic pool books and the back page of Billiards Digest.

Chris's Billiards
773- 286-4714
4637 N Milwaukee Ave
Chicago , IL 60630

But I have to agree with CueJoey on this one. Ask around for the safe places to go. When I travel there I play in the West suburbs, so I can't tell you alot about the downtown area.

BTW, since I travel alot...

I use these two sites to help me find places to play. I do always ask locals before actually going to some new place. You don't have to be one of those people who need a bad experience to learn this lesson, unless of course you do!

This one is by the state.

This one includes a proximity option and includes the map.

I've played there alot...Chris's Billiards is a good choice or anywhere in the western suburbs....where you don't have to worry about getting shot....

Pro-Tyme Billiards www.protymebilliards.com about 30 minutes away in Orland Park But one of the best in the country. They were listed last month as one of the 10 best pool halls in the nation.

Check it out. If you need more info contact me at windycityopen@aol.com Also, the Viking Tour will be there next weekend. That's a must to go to. Best tour out there!

There are many places to play in the city itself. City Pool Hall is downtown 640 W. Hubbard St. (312) 491-9690 It is very well kept and has good tables. G-Cue G-Cue Billiards 157 N. Morgan, Chicago (312) 850-3170 They have great equipment there too. Both G-Cue and City Pool Hall host many APA teams. Marie's Golden Gue 3241 W Montrose 773-478-2555 (I don't know if they still have tournaments there on Tuesdays). Their tables are super fast. Just arund the corner is Nick's Billiard Academy 4445 N Pulaski 773-583-2011. They are mostly kids who are just having fun. Corner Pocket 2610 N Halsted St 773-281-0050 (More of a party place) Lake View Billiards is pretty quiet. 3449 N Lincoln Ave (773) 871-8400. Chicago Billiard Cafe 5935 W. Irving Park Road 773-545-5102 The Cafe has one of the biggest paying tournaments on Thursday nights (handicapped) and every other Sat. They have some easier tables and a couple double shimmed too. Then of course there is Chris's Billiards 4637 N. Milwaukee Ave. 773-286-4714 That is where the Color of Money was partially filmed. They have a great cheap tournament on Sunday nights ($8 entry) and has a pretty good payout. The also have about 45 tables (5 are billiards and one is snooker). I believe they are going to be hosting a bigger tournament sometime around February.

I hope that helped. There are many other places to play that are outside of the city, but those are all within city limits.

There are some bars that are good for pool too, but you won't find action there.

If you want more info, you can email me at jumpcue@aol.com

For practice during the day, G-Cue has a special and very nice tables and food. I sometimes go there for long lunches. What games do you play? Are you looking for league or gambling or both?

Red Shoes on the South Side in Alsip has a bit of one-pocket and banks action and also has 2 straight pool leagues. Pockets in Crestwood has a lot of nice tables and a special practice rate. Que in Darien has a good practice rate.

Can anyone tell me what part of the colour of money was shot at chris's billiards as it would be nice to know.

The "Grady Seasons" scene was shot at Chris's. A way to recognize the room is that it has large column-like poles in it that you can see in the background of the scenes.

So, where in Chicago did you end up going and how did you like the room?
