Pool Halls in NYC

Could someone in NYC or familiar with the city tell me where I can go for some nice tables or to see some top players?

Depends on where you're staying. If you're in Manhattan, Corner Billiards or Amsterdam Billiards are usually frequented by top players. If you wanna take a cab ride or feel brave enough to take a train(without getting lost), take the E train to Master Billiards in Queens. Also, Jean Balukas usually plays in her own room on the last Thurs of the month. They have a tourney at Hall of Fame Billiards, on Ovington, in Brooklyn.

Have fun.

Though I'm not from the Big Apple, I think Ginky and Tony Robles play out of Master's Billiards on Queens Boulevard West.

I'd also think it would be GREAT to go to Jean Balukas' pool room. I read there is a weekly tournament there, Thursdays I think, in which she sometimes breaks out her cue and actually partakes.

9-Ball Girl will know where the cool places are to go, and I'm sure when she reads this thread, she'll provide you the nitty gritty on pool happenings in New York City. :)

There are very good players at Amsterdams, Corner Billiards and Master Billiards. Both Amsterdams and Corners have a nice lounge/bar section with good food and drink. The surrounding areas for those two halls are very nice as well

The East side Amsterdam isn't open anymore but the West side is. A lot of pros play in the Thursday night 8 ball league. Tony Robles and Jennifer Barretta to name a few.

All the above halls are nicer and would give you a better shot at seeing top players. But if you're around midtown and want to see more of an old-school place, check out Broadway Billiards on 21st St. A few house hustlers will try to prey on you, of course, and there are 3 extremely-tight pocket tables in the front that are good for practice. In fact, surprisingly, Tony Robles was on one of em last night. Also, the place is 24 hours ... and you can find a decent 1-hole game pretty easy, too.

Tony Robles - Gives Lessons @ Amsterdam (mon/thurs)

George "ginkster" San Souci - Works At Master Billiards In Queens Which There Is A Weekly Tourny. You Can Just Imagine Who Shows For That Every Week.

You Can Also Find Mika In Amsterdam, Not Often Anymore, But On Occation.

Also Some Of The Best Road Players, Both In Master And Amsterdam.
Joey "k", Eddie Vasquez, Joey Kong, (gip-rock)gypcy, Jon Smith, Chris Lynch To Name A Few.

Hope That Helps,

Peace............................

JAM is correct! I'll probably have repeats of what some have already mentioned on here:

Monday nights - Racks Billiards - they have their 9 ball tournament and you can see some great player action. (If Robbie Saez and Frankie Hernandez are in town, they may be there)

Wednesday nights - Master Billiards - Queens Boulevard where I think Danny Barouty has a straight pool tournament and if not that, then it's a 9 ball tournament

Thursday nights - Hall of Fame Billiards - Jean Balukas has a 9 ball tournament for the locals. She also plays in it on the last Thursday of the month. On occasion, if Gerda Hofstatter is in town, she will play too. And if any other WPBA woman is in town, they too will play

Other great players to watch are in Amsterdam Billiards West (Tony Robles and Chris Lynch are the house pros), Corner Billiards, and Master Billiards (where you'll see Ginky and Jenn Barretta whom you can also catch in Amsterdam's as well).

If you're looking for the hustle, then may I suggest Broadway Billiards (haven't been there in a while), Master Billiards (towards the end of the week), you may see some hustle in Racks on Monday nights too.

Hope this helps some!

Hey Franco! You know, some of those guys live just around the corner from me.

Also, if there's a big tourney somewhere on the East Coast, you'll get a lot of those players in town looking for action.

Thanks all!

Thanks Wendy, Jeannie, Frankie, Eric, Ironchef, Travis, Njhustler1, and Fliedout for your help. I was actually writing for a friend of mine, Todd Barker, who will be in NYC over the weekend. Your information will be very helpful to him. Thanks again!

Bill,

Todd's got friends?

Please tell him Hi from me.

I wonder if Todd has broken that 100 ball run mark yet?

You sure you don't want the guy to get lost? If you plan to get to Master, instead of Jamaica, Queens, I'd suggest the 7 train, myself.

Brooklyn does have it's hidden gems...southern Brooklyn, that is. Not necessarily out-of-towner-friendly.

Whaddaya talkin about ... don't know about Skyline because I haven't made it over there yet, but you won't run into any grief at Hall of Fame Billiards in Bay Ridge, in the southwest corner of the boro, at 5th Ave. and Ovington. Of course, in the local bars the cops and the barmaid will smoke if they damn please and you'll know it's best not to say nuthin.
