Pool in the Olympics?

Pool? Never heard of it..
Silver Member
I'm sitting here, watching the summer olympics and wondering to myself "Why isn't pool in the olympics?" Is it because of the various rules applied in different regions? We have the world cup of pool, everyone agrees to rules there. If it were in the olympics, would it be in the summer olympics, or the winter olympics? Also, who would best represent the USA if it WAS an olympic event?

(Why is olympics not in the dictionary on this forum, thus causing the red line under it every time I type it?)

1 other question to add to this would be....

What sort of insane rules would we have to expect, making this excessively more difficult?

If you right click on the red underlined word you will usually get why it is red lined. I would imagine it's because olympics should be capitalized. I don't know how to turn on that feature here, so nothing is red-underlined.

pool, an olympic sport? no way, never...

horse dancing crap (dressage)... sure.

how the heck can fancy horse walking be an olympic event and pool cannot? i mean it's horses...

Exactly. Let's watch some people riding horses.

It seems like most Olympic sports require muscle. Pool requires some muscle, and a LOT of muscle control.

I'm pretty sure this has been covered in at least 37 other threads over the past week, but since its here I'll bite. Its never gonna happen and wouldn't do dick for the game anyway.

Meh.

In 1998, it was recognized by the IOC as an international sports federation. This is the first step. They are now campaigning for inclusion in either the 2008, or 2012 Olympics.

They do not have a web site, but there is this article detailing with
the current position on the International Billiards and Snooker
Federation web site:
World Confederation of Billiard Sports
http://www.ibsf.org/wcbs/index.php

This is the relevant page on the International Olympic Committee web site.

"The Association of the IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF) World Confederation of Billiard Sports."
It contains contact information should you wish to seek further
information from the WCBS.

Carom, Pool and Snooker are all beng played in the 2005 World Games in
Duisburg. This is another step on the road to Olympic Status.
India is lobbying strongly for the inclusion of Cue Sports when they
host the next Commonwealth Games.
Cue Sports are already included in the Asian Games, SEA Games, Mediterranean Games.

I'm sure the judging would be simular to how they are doing it in boxing. 5 judges would hit a button if the ball goes in but 3 of them would score it for the guy sitting in his chair.

Because super stars like you would win it all and it wouldn't be fair!

I for one wouldn't want to see it become an Olympic sport simply because we wouldn't end up with the best player in the world with a gold medal around his/her neck. I don't know what the payout is, but I'm pretty sure you have to finish at least in the top four in any overseas major event in order to recover airfare, meals, rooms, ect. Does anybody really think that any of the top ranked pros would be willing to put up so much money for an event with absolutely no chance of a monetary return?
If billiards became an Olympic sport, you'd end up with a bunch of shortstops and teenagers playing for the gold, and the guy/girl at the top of the podium would be far from one of the best players in the world.

I think it would be great as an olympic sport. Pool on prime time television potentially live, count me in  .

Completely agreed, ESPECIALLY considering some of the sports that are played. Are you F@#king kidding me that based on some of the list below, that the game of Billiards does not deserve to be an Olympic sport? Seriously it's ridiculous. I feel those in Bold ALL should take a back seat to Billiards. Simply unbelievable. Golf isn't an Olympic sport either. WTF is that?

sorry, but your list is absolutely ridiculous. probably you dont even know what handball, badminton or table-tennis really are.

btw. pool at the olympics would be absolutely great:thumbup:

Pool maybe the game played by more people in the world than any other sports. It has the widest appeal between class of people from the richest to the poorest, all race and culture.

But i think the biggest problem is that a lot of people just like to poke and don't like to watch.

Majors sponsor from tabacco companies, gaming industry etc has faced many restrictions in sponsoring. Without a rich sponsor, this game is deteriorating. I don't suppose Mercedes or Nike would like to have anything to do with Pool. Do they? Or any other industries for that matter. Definitely not energy drink as there is not much to replenish playing Pool.

Opps, this is becoming a naggy whining post. Better stop here.

Can't stand the game myself but badminton is a highly athletic and fast sport which has nearly 300 million regular players, international federations with more than 140 member nations, an excellent structure for both the amateur and professional rankings and professional prize money that pool pros would salivate over......and few pool players are physically equipped to play it for more than 5 minutes. In Asia taken as a whole, despite Asia being the great hope for the future of pool, badminton absolutely dwarfs pool in popularity.

Why do we cueists always have to be so arrogantly dismissive of sports we seem to just not understand yet get all riled up when non-pool players express the view that pool is a simple unskilled childish bar game?
