Pool is becoming a rich man's sport

i pay $20 for 5 hours
$25 for 7 hours
and if you show up at 11am
and stay til closing at 2am, it $40

gold crowns, nine foot, simonis and aramith

and half the teevees have pool or
snooker matches along with nfl,
nba, mlb etc

For the average player our equipment costs nothing compared to other sports. Depending on your location going to the DCC can cost a bit but fancy cues are not required.

Have to agree. That's why I can play. Lol. My local hall is still at 4 beans an hour!! How's that for inflationary holdover?? Lol.

The end of the Road Player came with the advent of Cell Phones and Internet.
There's little chance for a top player to travel incognito from town to town like in the 70's and earlier.

IMO the only way for a top player to play the road game is to seek out their contemporaries.
In other words, travel to where another top player lives and lock horns. Rather than work the room till you meet the top player.

Shane can't walk into any room in the country and expect to work that room like the old days. We all know who he is when he crosses the threshold.

I suppose there's someone or ones that will try to run the country and never play a tournament for fear of getting known, but with phones, cameras and internet, they're gonna have to travel long distances between gigs, and even so, it won't last long.

It's damn near impossible nowadays.
Photos with cautionary tales pop up if you clean a place out. So, you might as well leave town and cruise on down the line. That town's dead for you.
Can't make good coin bangin heads with the local hero once word gets out. Which in today's numbers, is B4 you've left the parking lot.

True for the most part, but I tt some of the older players at a local hall I go to on occasion and "SS just don't go as far as it usedta" they say. Many tell me they'd play more often if they could afford it. That's just sad. The price at this local hall goes up 4 bits an hour after 6pm and the line of guys leaving at 5:55 pains me.

Look around for senior/community centers. There are two good ones in my area, one is 100% free pool and the other is 40-50bux A YEAR. Just gotta do a lil lookin.
 
Expensive case/cue not needed.
Maybe there should be more local events
Hope this does not sound arrogant but if it can’t be afforded don’t go to big events.

Those days are about gone. I watch a lot of 'pino action streams and while not fancy by any means all are indoors with decent tables. I'm sure out in the boonies you still have the shacks with the roosters in the background.

This is all true.

20 years ago you could get on SWA for $79, get a car rental in Vegas for $29 a day, stay at Caesar's for $89, and play in an event. The days of cheap travel have left the building.

I didn`t know there were any rich pool players. you must have a low bar for rich.
 
While it's possible to spend a lot of money playing pool, it certainly isn't necessary!

Even assuming you want your own good equipment, a complete, very playable setup can be had for a few hundred dollars.

In my pool room you can play all day before 6pm if you spend $10 on food and drink. So, for the cost of lunch or a couple of beers, seven days a week.

League players practice for free before and play for free after league. Their only cost is the $10 league fee that they pay on those nights that they actually play.

Those of us who spend more than that and pool, do so because we want to, not because we have to.
