Pool movie

I gotta agree with PHM on this. A movie like this won't bring people into the pool halls.

If you want a movie to bring people in, the movie would have to be popular, focused on pool, and make it seem like it really is a great and fun activity. Not just a dark way to bet and gamble.

Movies like Shooting Gallery, PHJ, and even the Hustler, all focused more on the drama of a brother being killed, bother falling victim, or the relationship between a guy and a girl. Yes, the Hustler had a lot of table action, and so did TCOM, but only the later parts where the focus became pool and Fast Eddie were either movie good for the pool society. During the drama with the woman/Vincent, pool wasn't the focus, and just pushed aside.

We need a pool comedy film.

Title: 9 ball to Vegas

It covers the trials and tribulations of different league teams trying to make there way to a finals in Vegas make them real CHARACTERS. You have the banker team, the punk team, the soccer mom team, the mullet team all throw in with sexual tension, team hustling and betting. The Happy Madison of pool movies.

I agree with PHM as well. I too will watch any movie that has to do with pool, but I don't want to see a movie that's going to depress the shit out of me. We need a comedy/drama, that makes the sport actually interesting, and maybe even tounches on some of the nuances of the game. Can Jack Black pull it off? Who knows?

Sounds a lot like Stickmen...

British film, genius, I wish I didn't 'lose' my copy...

Its just another movie. Its not gonna change the pool world for better or for worse. Of all the movies that have been out lately not one has done anything for pool either way. I dont think a dark film will cause more violence in pool halls nor will a "good" movie raise the class of people in a poolhall. Everyone just needs to chill and be glad SOMEONE in hollywood is doing somthing about pool at all.

Still have my copy and it's actually from New Zealand. I thought it was a pretty funny flick :D

On another note, a little further investigation revealed that this movie(Turn The River) will be part of the Independent Film Festival of Boston this spring :D

April 23 - 29: Independent Film Festival of Boston

"Turn" release date

Here is the most current info on 'Turn The River' directed and written by Chris Eigeman.
It will be released this May. There is going to be a screening on April 20 in NYC then released in May. The following I posted here a few months back. I hope the added info is a help.

I will be glad to let you all know about "Turn The River". My name is John "JJ"Juback and I am an actor by profession and played pool all my life except for the last 10 years of hardly getting to a table. I have a great part in 'Turn'. I was also Famke Janssen's pool teacher and advisor to the director Chris Eigeman for creating the pool shots etc, etc.

I was happy to recommend Tony Robles for the part he plays when the director/writer re-wrote one of the parts. Jude Rosenstock was going to play the part before it was changed because it was a very different type of character(this is very common in the film business). As we all know these are two really great guys and players and I was glad to do it.

I have played pool for many years and grew up playing at the Clifton Billiard Lounge when Ray Martin was owner and was winning his 3 World Championships. Because of my work situation my pool game has all but disappeared over the years. I have tried to stay in touch with it and thankfully while my game has suffered the knowledge is still there.

"Turn The River" was shot about 18 months ago. It is not a movie that is about pool but has a lot of pool in it. Tony has a small part as a pool hustler and I have been told he's very good. The movie was just shown in the Hampton Film Festival and got an award for screenplay and Famke Janssen who plays the lead character got an award for acting.

Here briefly is the story: it's about a woman who is a blue collar type person who plays cards, pool, likes to gamble and drinks a bit. She finds out her son who is about 13ish is getting beat up by her ex-husband. She lost custody years back because of the drinking and gambling. She comes up with a plan to win a bunch of money to buy fake ID/passports and a car and split with her son to Canada. The son is all for it. She then plays cards and a bunch of pool to get the money. I play a lawyer who plays very strong pool and gambles high. Almost all the pool stuff is with Fanke and me. I won't tell you how it turns out but I hope you all go see it. I will say that Famke shoots every shot she is supposed to shoot herself and for someone who knew only a bit about pool she is amazing.

Not only is 9-ball played but also alot of One Pocket (mostly the offensive shot making and run-out parts, some but not a lot of safety play cause its just to slow for a film).

From what I was told the producers could have gone with a low level distributer when it was first finished but decided to gamble and go the festival route with hopes of getting a better distribution deal. The awards they just got should help.

If you all have any questions fire away. I've been posting and reading and learning stuff here for a few years and it's an amazing site.

All the best,

JJ

Thanks for posting this. It's nice to know what's really happening, and not have to speculate. Looks like a very interesting film. Hopefully it will last a few weeks in the theaters and have a good run in DVD's.

Who made all the trick shots? Was that Tony too?

Jay,

The trick shots were all done by Famke and myself. Part of my job was to find or make shots she could learn. Some of them were very difficult but when the camera rolled she nailed it.

The director, to his credit asked me to come up with shots that were not obvious 'trick shots' but were more a product of the type of shot that would be or could be played in the game of One Pocket. They're a bit fancy but you will recognize most if not all of them I'm sure.
An added difficulty was she had to fly all over the world to do press for 'X Men' so our practice time together got cut into.

Since I haven't seen the movie yet Tony may in fact have some shots in it that I'm not aware of but the stuff in the scenes with Famke and myself were all shot by us.

So JJ, does this mean that the film was picked up by a major distributor? I am planning on going up to Boston next month to see it. It will be part of the Independent Film Festival Boston at the end of next month. They just released the list of films to be part of the festival and "Turn the River" is on it.

"TURN THE RIVER
directed by Chris Eigeman
Famke Jannsen delivers an affecting, gritty portrayal of a hustler using cards and pool to fund a new life with her young son who lives with her former husband. Directorial debut of Chris Eigeman (LAST DAYS OF DISCO)."

Looking forward to it.

George,

I'm just not sure about that. If your going specifically to see 'Turn' I would double check to make sure it's definitely playing. I went to the festival site after I saw your post a few days ago but couldn't find it listed but I was rushing so I could have easly missed it. If you have any trouble getting positive info let me know and I'll check for you with the director.

In my last post I included a new link to their site. It appears it was just updated in the last 48 hours with the list of films that they'll be screening and TTR is on the list :D

I'm not sure about the distributor but I'll find out about Boston.

Must be okay within the structure of the deal.

Hope you like it.

what ever happend to the movie Turn the river with famke jansenn. It was at sundance last year but i cant find anything about where to buy it. Also what ever happend to Jennifer barretas and Kid delicous movie. Seems like weve been hearing about these for years but have seen no finished product.
Thanks I did not even know about this movie and looking at the trailers I would say it looks like a winner. Anyone that says anything negative about this movie does not know how a real road player looks or the life they lead. Thanks again and I will be looking for it in May.
