Pool movies?

It's highly annoying that the only pool related movie able to be streamed on Netflix is Pool Hall Junkies. I've seen them all already but this thread and my insomnia made me check into it.

Theres a movie with Freddie prince junior also called shooting gallery

Kisses and Caroms

stickmen

but theres were only ever 3 worth watching, color of money, pollhall junkies and the hustler the best one well probably ever have.

I was really hoping they would make a movie about Danny Basvich's (sp) book.

We just got done watching the Shooting Gallery. Freddie Prince was great. I really like the movie a lot. Awesome plot.

Turn the River turned my stomach it is a wretched movie. Wish I could erase it from my head. Hurl

I haven't seen Color of Money in years. I recall not liking the "hollywood" way that they filmed while he was shooting (extreme close-ups, etc.)

The Hustler was/is awesome....great movie.

alternative...

if you want some low-budget easy to watch film I would recommend stickmen (NZ film), although certainly not going to be going near any hall of fame

It's just my lack of taste but I thoroughly enjoyed Pool Hall Junkies. Especially Christopher Walken
pool hall junkie was good, even though the plot wasn't great it's a good feeling movie

Pool Hall Junkies is one of the worst films I've ever seen. Even Walken couldn't redeem it for me.

Watch Rounders instead. Virtually the same movie as PHJ ripped the exact plot and used pool instead of poker...

I agree, the movie was pretty weak. It would have been better with a touch of inside.

Watched Gunsmoke today. There's an episode called "Cowtown Hustler".

I'm being pulled sideways on Saturday night, so time is brief for me now. I was BLOWN away at how this (50 yr old) show is still so current!

Grady Matthews was surely involved in this one hour episode that had sh1t right before its time.

I just noticed this episode was written by none other than Jim Byrnes! No wonder it struck me as having far more pool realism than I'd ever expect. This episode was @ an old time great player, taking to the road with an alias to gamble and hustle. This show had it all - stakehorses, gambling, back stabbing, dumping, women, fights - you name it!

And the old player played real well! I mean, he had a stroke! The actor was Emmy/Tony award winning Jack Albertson (you may recall him as the father to Charlie in Willy Wonka and as "The Man" in Chico and the Man).

Anyway, if you hadn't seen it, it's worth the hour! I did not sign up for the ability to see it, as I'd just seen it, but I believe you can do so easily.

IMO only three qualify as good.

To quote cajun in the very first post:
The hustler. Color of money. Baltimore bullet.

And the third isn't so much a good movie, it's just kind of a fun 80's style boys-having-adventures flick. More like an episode of The Dukes of Hazzard.
So really there are only 2 good pool movies.

If you had to pick only one, the safe bet is the color of money. An older black and white movie will throw off many viewers.

Pool Hall Junkies was kind of dumb.

Sounds like we have a scale to judge all pool movies. The Hustler representing the top, while Pool Hall Junkies represents the bottom. Now, it's just a matter of sorting the other pool movies against this scale (A Pool movie, or AP for short :-)

AP 7 - The Hustler
AP 6 -?
AP 5 -?
AP 4 -?
AP 3 -?
AP 2 - Pool Hall Junkies

The Hustler - The Color of Money - Pool Hall Junkies

The Hustler and The Color of Money are obvious recommendations, but Pool Hall Junkies is a great movie. Yes it is not an Academy Award caliber movie but the shooting and cinematography is first rate.

And remember, take note of the proper time to offer your opponent $5,000 to take his/her shot.

Some of the posters here on AZ are just too critical. We should be grateful there are any movies made about pool.
