I just got back into pool after like a 8 year hiatus because of health problems. Anyway, im kind of shocked at the abscence of pool on tv, most notably ESPN. Nothing at all, zip. Why is this ? I was watching and they had bowling on the other week. Bowling !! I would rather watch milk curl than watch bowling.
Is interest really that low ? It seems like every other day Jeanette was playing Alison or someone else, now nada.
Its enough to make you cry. Whats next , spelling bee competition before pool ? :frown:

You say you have been away from pool for 8 years but I think it has been much longer than that since there has been any real television tournament coverage.
There is still some Woman tournaments ,on occasions. And some trick shot coverage. But it is getting rare also.

But darts is picking up!! lol It surprises me a bit because there are allot of people that play pool across the country.Everyone knows what it is,,but I guess ,not many want to watch it.

Actually, yes. They show the spelling bee competition every year. And the hot dog eating contest. They even had the cup stacking championship recently. A while back someone won $100,000.00 in Vegas at the world 'rock, paper, scissors' championships. You can't blame ESPN. Their job is to show what people want to watch. If there was a market, they'd be showing it. Pool is on the path to become like chess-loved by a segment of enthusiasts, dabbled in by a few curious novices, and disregarded by everyone in the middle. FWIW, Darren Appleton told me the other day that it's the same in England, with clubs closing at a similar rate as here.

Relax...pool is on ESPN far more often than hot dog contests or spelling bees.

Besides, it is 2010. There is more pool on the youtube than you will ever be able to watch.

You'd better check the flux capacitor and resynch the delorian. I just checked to make sure it's 2013

"Can you repeat the word?"
- "Ratings"
"Can you us it in a sentence?"
- "Pocket Billiards doesn't get shiznit for ratings"

It's all about ratings. Pool doesn't pull decent ratings on ESPN, so ESPN has all but dumped it from their programming.

Despite what people think of the annual hot dog eating contest, last year it drew a record 1.95 million viewers at the live telecast and over 9 million when you include the reruns. Pool averages about 250k households for first run which translates into a Nielsen rating of right around 0.2.

If people wanted to watch pool on TV, ESPN would make room for it. If it doesn't pull numbers, it gets pushed to ESPN3 with the other niche and fringe sports.
