Pool room search - Chicago -Milwaukee

If you want the best pool room in the Chicago area.

Pyramid Pizza and Sports Bar. 236 W. Lake St., Addison, IL
(15 miles west of Chicago)

Don't let the name fool you. They have 16 Gold Crowns. Full Bar with dozens of beers. The place is HUGE.

They have a full restaurant menu, not just "bar" food. You can order from burgers to pasta to fish to ribs.

Oh, and they do have some of the best pizza in Chicago. You won't find the best pizza at the local "chain" places like Gino's East, Lou Malnati's, etc.

Just looked at photos...my gawd their pizza looks good! Thanks for the tip.

Bring the handi wipes if you go. This place is filthy. Was there last Friday meeting up with a buddy. Plus, no liquor to help you forget how filthy this place is. But, you are allowed to bring in your own liquor and food. It's a tad more depressing than historical imho, but prob worth the stop just to see it.

A mix of old school good players and just as many "bangers" who will walk right in front of you when shooting, or talk on their cell phones as if they were alone in their cars.

On the plus side they do have 3-cushion, snooker, gold crowns and 7 foot diamonds. So, there is something for everyone, including cholera

We all have our own perspective, RJ....

When I walk into Chris' I see George Fels yelling at himself for screwing up a straight
pool run...and bad-mouthing the upscale pool halls he called 'fern bars'.

I see Joe Diaz holding up his hands to a 3-cushion student and saying in a kind but
firm voice "Do not hit a ball hard in my presence."
I see my buddy, who was our national karate champion, being absolutely intimidated
by Joe and acting like a ten-year old kid around his grandpa.

I see Don Feeney (the Preacher) running 150 at 14.1, a century on the snooker table,
and 14 at 3-cushion....all on the same day.

I hear a cop at the clothing store downstairs yelling "Who owns the Ramcharger with
Ontario plates parked on the yellow line?"
I tell him I'll move it right now...
He asks "Are you shopping here?"
...I tell him that I always do...they want three times as much for a 100% cotton sweater
in Toronto...
He says "Take your time...as long as you're shopping."....:)

And I see Jeff Gates after countless hours make a lotta balls in one shot...

Chicago, from my personal experience, is my kinda town

pt...from Toronto...where Chicago pizza makers come to train in Little Italy..:duck:

Chris's is filthy.
Pretty sure this is nonsense - it's an old room that hasn't been remodeled in decades... maybe the carpet is stained. If you only play in suburban stripmall "pool halls", Chris's might not be to your taste. Suits me, and most other Chicago players, fine.

I'll be there later today (haven't been in a couple of months), and will report if something has changed drastically. Probably not.

Ok, filthy might have been a bit harsh, but its definitely dirty. Some folks don't mind and that is fine too. Yes, I'm use to going to clean places in the suburbs, or like my dads place when it was in Chicago, the North Shore Billiard Club, which was the best of the best and you could eat off the bathroom floors. So, yeah, I'm bit spoiled growing up in an immaculate pool room and even cleaner home. Mom cleaned both.

So, it's stands to reason I'm cleaner than the average bear and a bit more persnickety than most folks, and thus expect a bit more out of businesses, restaurants, cue makers and the such. Your mileage may vary ;)

And granted, having less murders in my town in a decade than Chicago had this morning is tough to get use to. But, just because I was born in Chicago, I'm not going to defend it.

cleanliness is not a perspective. Either it is or it is not ;)

I was with Joe Diaz in Vegas 10 years ago. We had a big party for my dad's 75th birthday, everyone was there. Joe died a few years after that party. His laugh was worth the price of admission. Truly great guy. Freddy, Artie and many others were in attendance. I wish someone would have thought to take a few pictures at the time, lol

This is how i feel about JOB's in Nashville. Great spot pool-wise but its a dump and the smoke is so bad they outta issue gas-masks at the door. To be fair i've heard that its much better now but smoke is still bad. In Chicago i like Red Shoes.

How are the tables these days down near the Loop at G-Cue or City Pool Hall? G-Cue still owned by Karabatsos?

As promised, here's my report on Chris's cleanliness. It's the same as ever: not unsanitary, just charmingly shabby. If they ever remodel they'll erase a living monument to pool's history.

However, to demonstrate that I take my vows seriously I sniffed around the place until I found the grossest thing there: the men's room lavatory - it looks worse than it is, mostly just ancient. The "business" parts of the bathroom are newer and spic and span.

P.S. To compare Chris's charming shabbiness with the other end of the pool bling spectrum, check out Surge, mentioned above. It's only a couple miles from Chris's, but in a whole other zip code décor-and-amenities-wise. Definitely not yer grampa's pool hall.

Let's just say Ghost is a formidable one pocket opponent, mkay? I rarely come out on top, even with the generous spot I get.

That's why I play him (I hate my money).

I have been to Chicago and Chris's several times. PJ has never shot at me. You'll be fine.

Ah yes The Ghost...Pissing him off is worth my airfare to get there. I love playing that man.
