Pool rooms in / around Yonkers, NY

I'm looking specifically for recommendations for a pool hall in Yonkers, NY, or very close by. (Not NYC.) Good equipment, a nice bar and decent food are a must.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. :)

Thanks in advance.

There's only one I know of which is Cafe Billiards. It's right off Central Ave on Tuckahoe Rd. Nice room, all brunswicks, 26 tables. No bar but they serve beer and the food is typical bar type food(burgers, chicken wings) which is usually good. There is a bar right next door though.

I used to live right near Cafe Billiards, in fact (I lived on Pondfield Road in Bronxville -- just a 2 minute drive to Cafe Billiards on Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers).

I'd been there a couple times since the original owner, Tommy, sold it, but the new owners are doing quite well. The tables are well maintained (at least the last time I was there, sometime last year), and the environment is nice. I recall a really nice 3/4-glass-encased cube called the VIP Room that had one impeccably maintained table, and with a push of a button on the wall, the glass on the three walls instantly opaqued for privacy.

This is probably your best bet for a good poolroom. There are others, but they're most likely in very seedy parts of Yonkers (e.g. Getty Square, aka "Ghetto Square").

If you're going to have a car, you can make the short drive into White Plains, and investigate Executive Billiards, on 109 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY 10601-5203. When Nick Varner's in the NY area, this is one of his favorite rooms to play at -- you can hear Nick give accolades to this place in a couple Accu-Stats videos when he's commenting on a straight pool match (plus, there's autographed pictures of him on the wall). And when you visit, you'll see why. It's spic and span clean, the tables are spotlessly maintained, the folks are gracious and friendly, and the place just has this "aura" about it. You'll see lots of folks playing -- get this -- straight pool!!

To the OP: if you're willing to drive about 45 minutes, let me know, and I'll introduce you to a few more places in upper Westchester/Putnam counties (plus I'd welcome the opportunity to meet you).

This surprises me. I stopped playing there 10+ years ago. I used to be there every night, friendly with the owner-never saw Nick there at all. Executive was Joe Rogan's homeroom when i shot there.

Now there was another place in WHite Plains called Hi Pockets-the owner had OCD-the place was spotless and it was a straight pool room for sure-never saw or heard of Nick there either though. It closed 7-8 yrs ago im guessing.

Nostroke, do you recall a player, nice guy but a real character, who was called Stu The Shoe and played in the Lower Westerchester area about 10 years ago?

No special reason, just wondering.

Of course-Stu Pomerantz-quite a character. He played out of Executive for a short while- 2-3 months. Stu actually was a user of the soft break pre Corey. I saw him many times- I once backed MT Vernon Tommy a set vs Stu $200-race to 11, we win the first set 11-0. The next set the same score -but we lose. Crazy.

Last i saw Stu maybe 3-4 years ago in that back alley pool hall in Yonkers-same guy no changes. If he was about any pool rooms lately around here, I think I would have heard something. He IS the guy people are likely to talk about.

Same Stu. Used to stop by and occasionally play in the weekly tournament in Whitestone Billiards about ten years ago. Always livened up the place.

When Whitestone first opened, it was the nicest room around. The crowd from Executive went there all the time until it went downhill fast. I once didnt get the "nightly special" rate becasue it was a Holiday-Halloween! Next thing i know the lady who gave me the halloween rates was giving haircuts in the place.

Ok quick reminisce-not a story but a snapshot of 3 minutes in a pool room. Stu wore a rug and it was obvious and Stu didnt have too many qualms about everyone knowing he had a rug. This other guy in the poolroom, a regular wore a pretty good rug and he thought he was pulling it off. Never referred to it.

Well Stu is practicing and suddenly starts talking about what a great idea it would be to have 900 telephone "wig line", a sure money maker. Now he wants confirmation from the shy wig wearer who is 2 tables away that this is a great idea. "Right Joe-what do you think Joe? huh-a nine hundred wig line?" There were customers (pool players) all over and The other guy was trying to disappear into the floor and Stu is still trying to get his professional opinion on the 900 "wig line".The guy was mortified and ignored Stu for as long as he could but he finally was forced to nod and Stu left him alone, much to his relief.
