As a physical therapist, I see a lot of people for foot and ankle pain, and often find that improper shoe wear is part of the problem. I would suggest this if you are looking to support your arch and foot well, and end up in a shoe that allows for more endurance:
I would go to a good running store (shoe store) in your area. Most reasonably populated areas have them, and most larger cities have multiple different ones. I am not talking about a foot locker or sports authority. I am talking about a dedicated running store with people who know how to analyze your foot type and walking pattern. I would go there, let them look at what type of arch you have, watch you walk, and put you in a shoe that matches your foot well. You can spend $120 on a nice shoe, but if you are a low arched person, and you buy a stability shoe for a high arched person, it will not feel well. They will usually bring you a few different brands to try, and you choose which is the best. The better ones by me give people 30 days to try them to make sure they feel good. If not, you just bring them back and try a different one.
In general, running shoes offer the most cushion and support for your foot. As long as you don't need to do quick lateral movements, then I would generally go with them for best support and comfort.
Most people don't realize how big of a difference there can be in how shoes can be made for different walking patterns and foot type. Having an expert fit you is the best way to go.
