Pool Table in an Unfinished Basement

I am considering buying a house with space for a 4.5 x 9 table in the basement. However, the basement in this particular house is not finished.

Does anyone have experience playing on a table in an unfinished basement? Are the collisions between the balls too loud against the concrete walls? Did you have any issues with temperature?

I would appreciate any advice you all have on whether it is good or bad to have a table in an unfinished basement. I may wait on the table until I can finish the basement, if the prevailing wisdom here thinks that is a good idea.

I have to say I have no experience, but am about to install my table in an unfinished basement, so hopefully it works well hehe.

Sealed concrete floor and am just going to put a square of carpet around the table.

Not loud at all in the basement while playing. Can hear it upstairs, but that can be dappened greatly with insulation in the ceiling. Wife got used to the noise right away and works nights, so is often sleeping when I play. Doesn't bother her at all because she knows I am home.

As long as you have a dehumidifier, it does not matter if the basement is finished.... just take the moisture out of the air, the pool table will think it's sitting at Buckingham Palace :)

Actually, even without a pool table, you should have a dehumidifier in the basement :)

I put my table in and then finished around it. It worked out really well. Did the floor first, of course.

First you buy a humidity gauge. Then you buy a dehumidifier. See if one dehumifier can keep your basement under 60 (I prefer 40-50). Once you get your humidity under control then set up your table and then you can play and finish the space at your own pace.

yep I did it for years. It was better then nothing and I didn't give a crap about the noise lol Get a dehumidifier ..you'll be fine.

My basement. Dehumidifier keeps the humidity at about 50%.space heater takes the chill out in the colder months. My wife doesn't mind the noise .

Have had a table in my basement for 15 years. No issues. Humidity is an issue during summer months only for me. I don't run the dehumidifier during the winter. Can get cool in winter but no problem.

I, too, have mine in an unfinished basement. And yes, humidity control is the key. I find 40 to 50% ideal as well. Winter humidity is no issue; I run the dehumidifiers summer only. Battery powered digital hygrometers are available at Amazon for about $12 and are great as a humidity monitor. Here in Michigan my basement winter temp [this year!] reached low 60s but with a long sleeve tee, I was good to go.

Thank you all for your comments. I am even more pumped up about potentially getting a new place.

If anyone has anymore tips to add, I am all ears. So far, I am convinced that I should monitor the humidity and that I will likely have to get a dehumidifier or two.

My basement has carpet and my buddy has the vinyl tiles. His seems to be louder than mine (with slight echoing). I think that might be the difference (the carpet).

If you're going to buy a hygrometer, (dehumidifiers already have them, but you may want a second opinion), I would say just go to the local hardware store and buy an analog one. They're cheap and last forever, you support a local business, and you're not wasting money on batteries that end up in the landfill.

Growing up we had a valley BB in our basement, if the noise is something that you think will bother you, I suggest buying some cheap curtains, and just putting curtains on the conrete walls, makes a HUGE difference!

but yes, a dehumidifier is a must!

If you hang curtains on a concrete wall, and don't have the dehumidifier, expect to get mold on the back side of the curtains.

my basement is not finished and I have no sound problems. I have a dehumidifier for summer months. works well. no problems.

Are you crazy?

Once a basement has a pool table in it , it IS finished.

LOL

I'll get a humidifier gauge, good idea there. I was also going to put in a heater in there as even with the boiler it gets a bit chilly for no jacket in winter.
