Pool table light

I finally got my Diamond table after waiting a little over 10 months! I had an Olhausen before and it was good but I sure like this table better. I am now looking for a new light. My old one just isn't cutting it with this table. I kind of like the Diamond light or the Littman but I think the price they are asking for them is crazy. I have been searching but can't seem to find anything similar at a better price. Please let me know if you have found that style of light at a better price.

Thanks

Not that style...
But, perimeter lights work better.

Recently came across this:

Half the price of the Predator one.
Does the same job.

Ideal if you plan on filming your games, even slow mo. No flicker.
No shadows either.

Otherwise, good luck on the search for the more traditional light.

What size table? How handy are you? Any lighting knowledge? For a 9' table you want at least 20,000 Lumens hitting the table, Ideally at 5,000K. You'd be best served with lighting that has a CRI (Color Rendering Index) of at least 90 so the colors are accurate. You can do some research with those specs as the target and make your own.

It's an 8 foot table. Thanks for the advise.

I did run across that site and they do look pretty good. Do you have one? Are they hard to install?

Not yet, but if they install like the predator light then it will be easy.
I have seen these types of lights now up close. Just a new level.

Give me some time, could be getting lots of them for a project in Australia soon.
I will do a review then.

Sounds good. Thanks.

I got this from Perimeter as well. It was easy to put together, and it works the same... meaning it also has the same challenges:

  • How to replace an LED array if one breaks
  • Rectangular light reflection on the balls

My wife loves the light, and that's the bottom line :)

Freddie <~~~ loves the light, too

Might want to be careful with that advice…

Perimeter lights seem to have become a bit of a rage with everyone eager to copy the Predator design. A local bar installed 3 of them over some Diamond bar-boxes and it totally changed the place, way too harsh & lots of glare. Also, no one has any feedback on them yet if & when one of the LED’s dies & needs replaced - looks like a big pain.

Take some time to compare and think about how much light you want on the table vs rest of the room. They do provide great & even table lighting but they also spill a lot of light around the rest of room, which some folks don’t like. The affect is sort of like the difference between playing in a large venue tournament with warehouse style tall ceiling where everything is daylight bright, vs a poolhall/bar environment, where off table is low lighting & the table is the focus. Obviously the table lighting is key, and IMO any of the modern diffused LED approaches that folks will recommend will do that well - the off table lighting where they really differ & is more of a personal pref thing. Personally I far prefer table to be lit great, with darker surroundings, and think the perimeter lights are pretty silly looking.

IMO, the perimeter light idea is mostly clever marketing - much better to base a pool light off the modern flat 2x2 & 2x4 modular LED panels that have essentially become the new standard for commercial drop ceilings.

If you’re handy, you can get 1-2 of these these, complete with hanger kits & a wireless controller (or std wall switch) for sub $300 for a pair of them. 1 is plenty for a barbox IMO, 2 is ideal for a 9., not sure about an 8… They are lightweight, low energy, and very low profile. Very simple, clean, modern, cost effective setup that is perfect for a home garage or rec room type setting. If you want something more fancier looking, you or someone handy can build a frame for them of your own design relatively simply or even pay a local craftsman to do it for you - that’s essentially what many of the newer vendors like Lite-Systems & others are doing.

Personally I have the Lite-Systems Fin Wide, which is great but its fairly pricey & quite heavy for its size. I’ve helped a few folks with setups using these LED panels and they work great. You can find similar at many lighting suppliers these days.

This topic has been covered ad nauseam about every other month or so. Might want to search & digest some older very comprehensive threads.

Good luck & enjoy your new table!

Thank you very much for your help. You bring up very good points.

Take a look at lite-systems
If I did a room again I’d load the ceiling up with LED high hats

Here is the link for Lite-systems.

When you say LED high hats, I’m assuming you are referring to recessed lighting? Some folks call it canned lighting.

What light do you currently have? Upgrade to LED a possibility?

My brother and I each got one of these for our 9 foot tables. They are excellent and, as someone else pointed out, something like half the price of the Predator. I would highly recommend it. Very even and extremely bright.

Thats a good point.

Near me a poolhall re-opened after a few years of closure, now under new mgt & new name. Tables are brand new fleet of gorgeous 7 & 9’ Diamonds. But the lights seem to be traditional ones from the old place, but using newer LED bulbs. Cost & power efficient, table lightning is great & the place is gorgeous.

Yeah I think I'm leaning that way. Are they dimmable?
