hey guys,
i need some help and opinions. i've been thinking of buying a pool table, most likely an 8' footer. here is where my question is, my funds are pretty low for a good quality table, so i was thinking about maybe getting a cheaper table and then slowly upgrading the rails and cloth. but, the question is weither or not its worth upgrading a cheap table? or should i just wait and save a bit more. also are all rails compatible with every table? thanks,
manuel

NO. The frame(and slate) on most cheaper tables make it impossible to really "upgrade". Save a little more and look for used tables(craigslist.com is the best for price, at least lately). And yes, most table have the same profile for rails. But not all, and they likely won't admit if they don't.

I've seen some great tables on craigslist for <$500. My suggestion would be to post a WTB ad offering pickup of their table.

How much are you looking to spend? If you let people know that, and your geographical area (S. Cal?) people here might be able to keep an eye out for good craigslist or ebay listings for you.

i was in your shoes about 3 months ago when i found a free 8' old bar box on craigslist. so i got a few friends and a trailer to go pick it up, and thank god i'm pretty handy with tools as this thing needed loads of work. about 3 months of part time labor (on my part) and mabye $800 or so for lumber (replaced 1 side, filled in holes, re-braced the frame and built a custom light box), rails, pockets / new ball return and cloth and i got a totally custom made by me - mostly - table that will look and play exactly how i want.

$800 sounds a little steep for a "free table" but it was spread out over time so it really wasn't all that bad. bottom line . . .

IF you find a well made old table that needs work for free or little money
IF you have friends to help out with the heavy stuff
IF you know a local mechanic that will offer ideas and work for beer and chineese food (like i had  )
IF your handy and have access to tools and a work shop

then go for it, its a blast. if not i would go the MUCH easier route of saving up and getting half way decent that dosen't need any work.
