Pool Tables in Garage - Any Problems?

Are there are problems that arise from having your pool table in your two car garage? I am looking into purchasing a house in the next two months and with what I can afford I would more than likely have my table in the garage (unless I can find a house with a large enough room). Some things I have taken into consideration:

1. Obviously making sure there is plenty of room to fit the table in there.
2. Possibly need carpet because concrete is cold.
3. Insulate and Finish the garage drywall to keep warmth in so table won't warp.
4. Making sure there is a light plug on the ceiling where the table light
would be plugged in.
5. Maybe making sure that rain from the outside doesn't come inside or ruin carpet.
6. Maybe sealing/taping gaps around garage door where cold air could come in.
7. Maybe need a space heater/electric fireplace for warmth since no heat duct fed to garage?

Any other things that I should take into account? Have you had any problems with having your table in there?
 
It looks like your list is good.The main thing you want to control in the room is the tempature and humidity.These are the to things that effect a pool table.
 
Aren't most garages built on like a 2% grade to help drainage, or something like that? So that would mean one side of the table will be ever so slightly higher than the other side.

Some sound deadening material might be good too if you don't carpet the full floor, concrete echos really well.
 
Correct me if I am confusing him with someone else, but I beleive AZ's very own John Schmidt has/had a table set up in a garage in 'humid' Florida. I know this because he was kind enough to talk with me on the phone when I was having concerns with my table's cloth.

You are right. Or they atleast slope in a direction out of the garage. My garage is bad about it. There is a 3" difference from one side of my table to the other side. You can feel a major difference when you lean over the table.

My table is in my Garage. I don't have carpet down yet. I just wanted my table. However I'm a table mechanic and can take the table apart and move it all day long without it costing me a thing. So if I wasn't a mechanic I'd put carpet down first.

I did heat my garage with a couple of heaters which seem to work great. If you have gas that's even better.

Also what kind of table do you plan to get. A Furniture style or Commecial with Leg levelers?
 
I will more than likely be purchasing a used 9ft Gold Crown III from our own "ajrack" as he has several in storage here in Vancouver.
 
While mine is not on a concrete floor, it is in the 2nd floor of our shop. The table is sitting on an extra sheet of plywood, as an added barrier from the cold. We heat the shop with a wood stove. I recommend that in this rainy season, you heat the garage for at least an hour before uncovering and using the table. We have found that if you uncover the table immediately before the heat has had a chance to remove moisture from the air, it will get the cloth on the table damp, as it wants to attach itself to the next coldest thing in the room...the slate.

I might recommend the plywood with the carpet on top for sitting directly on the concrete floor, should provide a nice barrier from the cold and moisture. And no, the plywood does not slide around on the floor.

I have heard that direct sunlight can accelerate the aging of cushion rubber, which makes sense. Could cause the cloth to fade too, I assume. Of course, this problem isn't limited to a garage, but anyway, if you have any windows in there, you might want to get curtains and/or a table cover. Oh yeah, you might want an auxiliary fridge in there too for easy access to your beverage of choice. :D

yes temp.and humidity problems as mentioned.especially in Washington.concrete floor check with the carpet people for the best mold proof carpet for basement type use.perhaps a plastic down first to keep moisture out..nice plush carpet is good on your feet and back.be careful on getting the right furnace/heater.extending duct work from a basement to a garage is easy.you will still need supplemental heat.make sure you have a cold air return so air will circulate better..that way when the whole house fan is on the garage will get some. ..most of the NO VENT gas heaters actually create Humidity.something you do not want.put ALOT of insulation everywhere.it will pay for you in your cold climate.also you do not want alot of hot air blowing on your wood table or where your cues will be stored..good luck in your project and keep us posted...

Still got the small beer fridge from college. All set in that department. :D :D
 
Haven't been going there for a while. I beat Shoe for the first time the other night (only other time we have played I missed a straight in 8 for the win).

If you need help setting up that table, let me know. I used to do that back in OKC. What will you be using to control the humidity?

You may want to reserve one if you haven't already. He may have a buyer in Montana for some or all of the tables. Have you seen Sarge lately - guess he is dealing now.

Good question. Any ideas out there? I know about huge dehumidification units being in the industrial painting industry but not much about small home units. Does anyone else have specific units for their pool room in the garage?

I haven't seen Jackson for a month or so. He was going on a trip to Austrailia. If he doesn't have one I also possibly have a line on a reasonable GC4. And if not that then I may bite the bullet and get a brand new Gibson. Since I will have it the rest of my life it'd be a good investment.

I haven't seen Sarge since he came to UW a couple times for some exhibitions.

I have a friend and wife (long distance truckers), who are buying some property and house about 20-30 miles ne of Vancouver at the end of the month. I just built them three matching cues, told him I would try to get hold of Jackson (he know Jackson from Phx) to see where the best place to play is. But just thought you might help me help him with that.

Watch out for insects!

In addition to all the other comments, if you play with the garage door open you may need to watch out for insects, especially ones that may want to actually join in the game.

During flying ant season at one point I was vacuuming the table between every shot!

I have seen advertised a giant roll-up screen door for a garage that I am tempted to get for next summer.

Many years ago. I had a friend that had a nice table in his garage. I asked about the humity and temp also. My friend worked/repaired pianos. There is themal warmer, used mostly to stabilize pianos from those same factors, that is small and uses little voltage. He attached it to the bottom of the slates. Kept the table dry and temp consistent. I used one for awhile in my gun safe, which is in my garage, to control the mosture. They are not big, and were not very expensive, and they are intended for that purpose.

Just a thought, I think you can still find them.
