Poor mans DRO

I bought a much smaller one awhile back but haven't done anything with it yet. I did play with it, and it seems cool, but that's all I can say.

It works well

I have one on my Porper Model B. It works great and was easy to install. I am actually think of buying another one to cover another axis.

Looks pretty slick. I wonder if they have a quantity discount. I could use 10-12 of these babies.

I browsed the "store" of this seller and the DRO comes in 6", 12", 24" and 35" lengths. I'm wondering if the 12" or 24" would be good for a Taig based lathe? Maybe a depth DRO and do it yourself install would be more than needed, but I could see where this would have a lot of benefits. Thoughts?

I looked at those before making my own DRO, I didn't hear good things about them plus I didn't want the wires hanging all over the place. This is what I did to make my own Poor Mans DRO.

I tried this set up and that sucker wigs out all the time. This is why I am looking for another option.
I also like the option of having a reading of more than an inch.

The one thing I do not like about the cheap caliper type DRO is that if you get water/coolant /very sweaty hands on the slide,it will have read errors.
I am a fan of long travel DTI's but analog. I just like to see where the dial is.I also prefer the metric series as they are usually in 0.01 increments of the direct read,as compared to the .001 inch.Although the feature of zero set can be handy with the digital plunger indicators.

I haven't had a problem with mine at all...... YET. I know it's just a cheap gauge and I very rarely cut any rings, so I can very easily see where if you are cutting a good bit of rings you'de want a better set-up and definitely more travel than 1". I had to cut about 6-8 rings for doing some j/p's and I needed it for that. Other than that, I'm not near the point of building any cues so it doesn't get used that often. I'de be interested in hearing any feedback on the one you posted a link to IF you go that route.
