I must have clicked on the wrong forum and put this into NPR. Thats ok too as I hang out there quite a bit. Just thought that you guys might enjoy reading this as well.
his year was a very great year for us. Our second level Novice team finally won that elusive Vegas trip.
The Upper Intermediate team that I played on, went from last place to winning the cash tourney.
My wife and I went from a last place standing to winning the Scotch Double last Sunday.
The Scotch league is an open league, any level of player. The teams usually consist of one Modified Intermediate (below Master) and one Intermediate or a good novice player.
We got our butts handed to us on a weekly basis but we took our lumps and kept at it.
7 teams showed up, which meant that we played 6 sets of four games. We received handicap points but not many. Approx 8 points per set usually. Funny thing was, 5 out of the 6 sets, we beat the teams fair and square and didn't need the points. Even at 8 points, most teams should have been able to over come those and win.
The team that was in first place, a Master and a strong Intermediate were the only team that we needed point to beat. His female partner placed 16 in womans singles this year in Vegas.
If we hadn't have had those points, the worst that would have happened was that we would have won second place without HC points.
Now here is the kicker. This guy that I have mentioned before, the guy who buys 300 dollar tips for his cue, the guy that has played Earl Strickland, the guy that won't go to the pool hall because there is no real competition there for him, the guy who plays on a bar table and gambles 500 a ball.
After our Wed night spring league games, we hung out and were playing a bit. I was sitting eating wings and I over hear a conversation, see above person that I mentioned, telling another that handicap points suck. That you don't have to be a good player, just put yourself at the bottom, receive mucho HC points and thats all you have to do to win a tournament.
Obviously the conversation was meant to be loud enuff for me to hear. Also, coming from a person that previously was a great proponent of using handicap points in league.
BTW, I am for using points during league play but pretty much against it come tournament time. Run what you brung.
He told the guy that he told our LO that it was BS and that he was done with league.
Considering that I am one of the 4 people that are on the league committee, I will have to ask the LO if he had said this.
I had decided a couple of years ago that we should have an extra committee in order to help our LO because I could see that he was getting over whelmed at times and that he was very sincere about making positive changes in the VNEA League over the past years of gross mismanagement.
Little does this guy know that as per conversation this past Sunday between myself and the LO, that he is tired of the whiners and complainers and is getting tired of trying to accommodate all of them.
This new season, several of the habituals will be invited to take a break and play in the cities other league for a year to see if they like it any better.
This guy and his partner were also the only ones that didn't shake our hands later and say congratulations. Everyone else, I think felt a bit bad about crushing us every weeks and mentioned that we played well and deserved to have a good win.
