Cant buy a new Porper "B" but this lathe is on Ebay.
Has 1.5 inch thru hole and 40" between centers.
Tempting.

Nice find. Unfortunately, like most metal lathes, the size advertised (40.5") is not the length between centers. The specs show it is 750mm b/t centers, which is less than 30". A prudent buyer would get written confirmation as to whether that dimension is from the front of the chuck or from the front of the spindle opening.

Another concern is that even though specs indicate the spindle through hole is roughly 1.5", the 125mm chucks generally have a 1.125" through hole. Again, get confirmation for the chuck through hole size. An option might be to upgrade to the larger 160mm chuck (if it fits) or bore this one out for use (if possible).

One of the sellers is in the US, if someone cares to find out more info. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Elongated-Precision-Mini-Metal-Lathe-

Wouldn't it be SOP to report the distance between centers using the stock lathe center installed in the spindle?

Lathe

Those machines arrive new with all kinds of issues.. if you like to work on them right out of the box and do upgrades yourself those little machines can be made to run not so bad but most of them are very poorly made/assembled...

For the money... buy a jet or a grizzly, at least you’ll be able to get customer support and be able to locate replacement parts..

Those lathes are sold under a multitude of names. I would get one with 1 meter (40") between centers, remember that the live center sticks out and takes up a few inches, if your planning on buying a 5C collet chuck, you'll loose another inch.

it shows 750MM between centers that comes out to 29.3 inches
The 40.5 is the total length of the footprint for the lathe.
