The handle on the right side of the saddle releases and locks the carriage to either slide in and out freely or of course stay in a fixed position.
So....
Loosen it from the handle pointing away from you til it points towards you.
Then see if it slides freely in and out. If it does, perfect. If it doesn't, you may have to loosen it a little more because the side plate behind the handle could be bent.
This is the first check point.
The taper bar has 2 slots inside it.
The slot closest to you is for butt tapers. The one in back is for shafts. There is a bearing that rides inside it that locks by the lever attached to it.
Pretty simple. You either have the carriage locked or unlocked. You can't do both at the same time. It will bind.
On the chuck side of the lathe, the taper bar has 3 positions (holes)
On the tailstock side, the taper bar is slotted and there's a dial indicator there.
In the early 90's we talked about doing a better video showing the multiple functions along with a break down of total cleaning.
It never happened. Probably my fault. Lol
But anyways.
Get some wood and a note book and start turning and taking notes.
