Possible change in format in Chicago

While at the recent Reno event Mike Siegel was claiming that a new first round format will be used in Chicago. Instead of groups of five there would be groups of ten with a total of nine matches over two days with six of the ten advancing. I don't know if this is for sure but I'm sure he has been pushing for it with KT.

Apparantly MS was not happy to have to scramble to get out of his round after an early loss to Helena. A larger group would tend to favor the stronger players with a lesser chance for upsets.

IMO I like the present format of groups of five and six as each match means more. Baseball got it right when they went they split the AL and NL into multiple divisions to add to the interest.

Again this was just coming from Mike the mouth and have not seen anything concrete.

I would agree with this change. Not only would it help the stronger players, but it would make the groups even more equal for the second round and onwards.

Hey I got an idea, how about bonus racks for non-stop talking and boring the ass of everybody you speak too?

how about this...
how about kt gives mike sigel first place prize money no matter where he finishes so he can stop crying....

It doesn't really matter what format they give Mike, in order to be the best you have to beat the best, something Mike isn't gonna do, especially if he can't beat Helena.

I heard a similar rumor. The problem is that you need 75 tables with just 150 players (Chicago) if you want to finish the first round in two days. Not impossible, but a lot more work. Each group of 10 players would have to play 45 matches, while if they are in two groups of 5, the 10 would play only 20 matches (total).

I'll admit that I'm tired and not too good with figures, but I just can't grasp your numbers. Wouldn't a group of five play only four matches, because they don't play themselves ? Wouldn't a group of 10 only have to play each of the other nine players or nine matches in order to advance in a group of the six best of their ten ?

(I may read the answer in the morning when I'm more alert)

A round robin with five players requires these ten matches to complete.

A vs B
A vs C
A vs D
A vs E
B vs C
B vs D
B vs E
C vs D
C vs E
D vs E

I don't really think you need to do anything more to favour the better players. You can't argue that anybody who made it into the final groupings in any of the last three tournaments didn't deserve to be there. No undeserving player will ever win a round robin event, unless the whole thing is fixed.

If Mike doesn't want to scramble to qualify for the next group he should just win his matches. If this were any other tournament he would have gone out in the first round Helena, or at least be on the B side.

Maybe the matches should all be 10 ahead sets. That would favour the better player in a HUGE way. :D:D:D:D
