Powerfeed Help - Carriage Binding

Just a random thing...

I went out this morning and found an unopened Cherry ChapStick in the parking lot of the school when I went out to pick my son up this morning. I gave it to him and later he handed it back to me with some residue on the cap...I rubbed it between my fingers and EUREKA.... I knew it would work before I even had a chance to try it. It's plentiful and CHEAP,then add to it the fact it's not as messy as oils, and you see why I had to share ;). Tommy D.

The best lube, IMO, is Automotive Transmission fluid. It is designed to work with aluminum, plastic, and steel. It doesn't allow rust on steel parts, and doesn't make the wood dust accumulate into woodsnot. A very thin layer will stay on the ways much longer than anything else I've tried, and not turn into a dirt attraction that most lubes will do. And the best part, you get it at your local auto parts store for about $7 a quart.
I went thru 2 sets of halfnuts on my atlas lathe in about 2-3 years just doing tapering. I have not had to change them since changing to tranny fluid. They last longer and there's no woodsnot buildup on the leadscrew or the ways. I have a deluxe, a 54" atlas, a 7x14" mini lathe and a jet sanding lathe and use this on all of them with no issues. I use an old eye dropper to place it exactly where I want and then run it.
Hope this helps someone...

Chapstick has a heavy amount of wax, which seems to works well at first, but will trap wooddust into it and will turn gummy soon afterwards. Can be a Bi@# to clean it all off after it jams you up.
