A total of 96 players showed up at Bill and Billie's in Arnold, MD for the $2,500-added Planet Pool 9-Ball tournament. BAZARUS, Black-Balled, and VAP were some of the AzBilliards' members in attendance.

Some exciting matches on the A side of the charts: Pennsylvania State Champion Joe DiPietro defeats UPA Touring Pro and Korean Yellow Dragon-sponsored Mike Davis, 9 to 3. Mike beat Jump Shot Mechanic Danny Green in the first round. Ryan "Genie Man" McCreesh beats Keith "Earthquake" McCready, 9 to 6. The beautiful and VERY talented Sueyen Rhee scored a win over Nick "The Bald Guy" Prinsloo, 9 to 3.

Pookie, who has been MIA on the pool scene as of late, was uncharacteristically knocked out of the tournament early. He says he just returned from a trip to his home country of Thailand, AND he's been passing his time lately playing poker on the Internet, stating he's made a few lucrative scores! ;)

Bill and Billie's has almost 30 tables (I think), and this is a godsend to any tournament director. The matches move fast, with very little wait time. Philippi's son was there providing cue repair and maintenance, much to the delight of many players, including Keith. I just recently found out that Philippi himself, the dad, used to be a local Maryland champion player named "Rooster." Several decades ago, I remember seeing Rooster play Geese from Rockville and Turtle from Westminister in a variety of action games. I always got a kick out of seeing the three of them, Rooster, Geese, and Turtle, and the comments from the rail were hilarious because of their nicknames.

Jerry Slivka won several matches with his mighty break and straight-shooting style of play. However, right before we departed for the evening, I saw a young gun by the name of Brandon S., whose last name escapes me at the time of the writing, knock Jerry to the losers' bracket. It was frustrating for Jerry as he made no mistakes, but this kid kept running out, leaving Jerry benched for most of the match.

Last year's season finale winner Brett Stottlemyer is still on the A side of the charts as of this morning, as is the 69-year-old veteran from Pittsburgh, Don Steele!

After the conclusion of the evening session, Don Steele and his wife went to dinner with Keith and myself at a local restaurant. Don used to travel all around the country years ago and has played them all. He's like a walking encylopedia when it comes to Who's Who in Pool! They have been married almost 50 years, quite an accomplishment in today's world. They still travel quite a bit, and he NEVER leaves home without her. She watches every single match of Don's and is a professional railbird just like JAM! They really are a nice couple, and it's always great running into them on the tournament trail. :p

Genie Man has scored a first-place win TWICE now at Bill and Billie's. Will he be able to add another win to his belt? Time will tell. So stay tuned. The matches begin today at 11:00 a.m. The one-day ladies tournament also begins today at 11:00 a.m.

Next PP 9-Ball Tournament will be at Breaktime Sports Grill and Pub in Salisbury, MD, owned by John Moody, Jr., a host to many pool events. He also competed in the U.S. Open last year. It will be a $2,000-added tournament. There will also be an amateur 8-ball tournament held, too. For more information, check out the Planet Pool 9-Ball Tour website.

Next weekend, March 5-6, there is a $5,000-added Joss Northeast 9-Ball tournament at Ultimate Billiards in Berlin, CT!

Weekend tournaments are the BEST for the majority of players. They are economically attractive, and tournaments consisting of an average of 100 players are completed within 2 days, enabling most folks to attend, especially worknig stiffs like me.

For all of you local action enthusiasts, I heard a rumor that this coming Tuesday, there's a one-pocket competition exhibition in the making: Jerry Slivka vs. Keith McCready. The details are still being worked out, but it looks like it's going to be a "go."

to help a little jam......i left shortly after you did. walter koch was playing mike davis when we left. brandon shuff is still on the a side. he plays the other brandon that beat slivka when they come back today. i'd say the one that beat slivka will be in the hot seat match with the genie man.

i finished in the top half 1 round out of the money (gave the last match away like a chump :D ) .......but i broke my tourney slump as of late thank god. i won't be at the next pp event, but hopefully the one after.

is the slivka/mccready match going to be at USA? i might try to make it for that one.

thanks

Wow. I thought Black-Balled was still on the A side when we left. The winner of this match will play Keith at 11:00 a.m. today.

Brandon Shuff is one of my favorite young guns in Virginia. After his first experience at the recent Derby City Classic last month, he came back a changed man (LOL). Only playing for 3 years now, this kid packs a mean punch. The other Brandon is definitely the dark horse of this tournament (IMO).

You done good, Kid! The first win is ALWAYS the hardest, but after you start booking a few winners, you will find that you, too, are capable of making it to the winner's circle. In a race to 9, if you're hitting 'em good, you can get there!

I'll keep you posted, VAP, before you make the trek. It looks like it will take place at the same place as last time! ;)

Check out Jerry wearing that Hustlin brand of clothing. These shirts and hats are quite popular in my neck of the woods! :D

this was my first planet pool, and i like the rack your own winner break format.......being down 8-3 in my first match and winning 9-8........LOL gotta love winner breaks :D

pm me when you find out the details...........i'm assuming the rail will be open to all bets? :p

Joe DiPietro of Pennsylvania won $1,500 for first place at the PP 9-Ball tourney at Bill and Billie's in Arnold, Maryland. Kevin West of Delaware won $1,000 for second place. Ryan McCreesh wins $630 for third, and Brandon Shuff won $400 for fourth place. Great tournament, as usual!

When we left this evening, the ladies finals were in progress. Amanda Pasko came in fourth place, Jennie Parks came in third.

Here's an interesting little tidbit. I heard that there was a $2,000-added tournament held at Great Slates in Cambridge, Maryland, recently, which was a women's BCA Open qualifier.

ONLY SIX LADY PLAYERS SHOWED UP! I am wondering why there was such a SMALL turnout for a BCA Open qualifier!

Wow! That's awful, do you have any more info on who ran the event? Did they still payout the the 2g? Wow, that would really bite!

I think the guys who run PP ran the Q'er, though it was NOT a PP event. I don't know why the turn out was so low, IMO it was not heavily advertised and the weather may have been bad that weekend too...I really can't remember.

Congrats, VAP, that's quite a comeback! I too had a personal best of winning 2 matches, one more than my previous PP event. So, extrapolating this out, if I keep winning one more match/pp event, I'm due to win the entire thing after about 10 more events!

It was a great turnout with almost 100 players and all the top ones there.

My only complaint (other than the tables without the ball returns): my feet are killing me since there was nowhere to sit while not playing a match.

I agree wholeheartedly, Beetle, about the lack of seating. Here's a great pool room with PLENTY of tables, making a 100-player field move swiftly, but definitely there are not enough chairs.

When we returned on Sunday, I brought two folding chairs from my home, so that Mrs. Steele, a lady in her sixties who suffers from diabetes, and I could have DESIGNATED chairs at all times. Don Steele and his wife drive in from Pittsburgh to attend the PP 9-Ball Tour events, about a 4 to 6-hour drive, depending on where the tournaments are held.

Joe DiPietro who won this tournament has been around the pool scene for quite some time. He's won a couple of Allen Hopkins amateur tournaments at the Super Billiards Expo. Currently, he's the Pennsylvania State 8- and 9-ball champ, a few little stats I was told. We see him competing on the Joss Tour as well.

Some players have funny little characteristics when they're engaged in competition. Genie Man starts rubbing his head when he's taking the heat. Jerry Slivka doesn't want anyone else's hands touching the balls when it's his turn to rack, maintaining some sort of superstition. When Joe DiPietro gets ready to break the balls, his two feet begin to do a twist like the mashed potato dance, and then when he fires the trigger, he makes kind of a hop, doing the cha-cha-cha. It works for him because he breaks excellent. :p

Kevin West from Delaware, a working man by day, was elated to come in second place and win a thousand bucks. He lost is very first round on Saturday and managed to make it to the winner's circle to play Joe. Kevin had a very good tournament, indeed.

Most of the matches on Sunday seem to go to hill-hill, and it was quite exciting. Racing to 9, Veteran player Don Steele, who owns a pool room in Pittsburgh, had Genie Man 8 to 2, and Ryan managed to win the match, knocking Don to the B side at that time.

After the Open Event concluded, UPA Touring Pro and Korean Yellow Dragon semi-sponsored player Mike Davis and Keith McCready engaged in a friendly game of snooker on one of the 12-footers. Mike said he's only played the game a few times, but he was making long shots in those tiny pockets with precision. After several hours, Keith and Mike decided to call it a night and broke even.

It was another successful tournament on the PP 9-Ball Tour. Two weeks from now, the tour resumes in Salisbury, Maryland, for a $2,000-added event. :)

Eydie, you sure are right. John Moody, Jr., who owns Great Slates in Cambridge, Maryland, hosts MANY tournaments to various tours and has a history of being one of pool's best sponsors in this area. This BCA Open qualifier was not affilliated at all with the PP 9-Ball Tour. However, Nick "The Bald Guy" Prinsloo, who co-runs the PP 9-Ball Tour, was hired to run this BCA Open qualifier tournament, to ensure that it ran smoothly. Nick mailed out announcements about this event to every single person on the mailing list for the PP 9-Ball Tour in an effort to let folks know about this $2,000-added event.

A lady from Canada won it, I heard, but I cannot find any article in the print media about this BCA Open qualifier.

I know that the BCA Open qualifiers are posted well ahead of time on the BCA website. It is a shame that there was no post, advertisement, or notice given to alert folks about this tournament. I'm sure the lady who won it from Canada was tickled pink to win her spot in Vegas later this year, only having to compete with five others. :p

Here's the link to the BCA's website for future BCA Open 9-Ball Qualifiers: http://www.bca-pool.com/cgi/site/fr...ts/9ballpro_qualifiers/9ball_qualifiers.shtml

Qualifier

I talked to Nick right after he was at the event in Cambridge (you are right it was Nick & not affiliated with us as a tour). He was asked only two weeks in advance - which gave little time for anyone to schedule a weekend at Great Slates. A few of our regular players had called and were going to come - but they didn't show up. Not sure what happened. They did pay out the entire $2k and the seat in Vegas. Some very lucky ladies. Crazy stuff!

Brandon Sluzalis is the other Brandon's name - both great strong players - both very well behaved (from my side of the table - with other players - I couldn't venture to answer that).

I had a fabulous time over the weekend - usually my desk is set-up somewhere out of the way - and I don't get to watch - at this location I get to watch the feature matches from a front row seat. Definitely a plus for me!

Not much else I can add, JAM always covers it the best.
Thanks again JAM for your posts!
