PPV events

Lately many events are offering PPV. I think maybe too many and it might be time for a channel with yearly membership. The fees are reasonable for PPV events, but now coming 2 or 3 a month it is costing a lot...

I'm not a fan of the PPV idea. I like watching matches and I have bought some from TAR but I don't subscribe to the PPV events.

Main Reason: I have to be home and watching at the time of the event.
2nd Reason: In most cases I need to pay using a credit card. I know some allow for paypal, but either way, I'm really not all that thrilled about paying on-line for something I can only watch once if I'm lucky and don't have "technical issues" when I can purchase matches that I can watch on my TV and enjoy a better quality product at my lesiure.

My suggestion: Use the live streaming as a try before you buy type of thing. Use the number of viewers to attract advertisers and make your money selling videos.

I know I'm probably in the minority in todays culture of instant gratification, but perhaps peoples mindset will be changed with the uncertian financial times.

I wonder...is there a way to take what is streamed to your computer and record it?
I'm pretty sure that where there's a will there's a way. Next question would be is it legal or ethical. The Question after that would be is it worth it as streamed video is of a lower quality.

Good points. I was just wondering if there was a way to record online streams for my personal use. I hadn't considered the legal or ethical issues.

As a volunteer firefighter, i don't always get to plan my leisure time. Sometimes I go out the door at a moments notice and don't get back for hours. It would be nice if I were able to hit some kind of "RECORD" button so I could catch the action later.

Use firefox as your internet browser and get 'DownloadHelper' it rips streaming video and saves it to your pc. There are alot of other ad ons that do the same as well.

Wasn't there a company called billiardchannel for something like that? I think their idea was along these lines but came out too soon before live streaming.

Not sure, but I do know there is way too many events now to buy them all. I would sooner spend $200 for a year and the PPV for special events like challenge matches live, but offer these matches a couple of months later for free viewing on the channel. I think they could get enough viewers watching free pool that sponsors may look at advertising on site. Also they could do PPV coaching/instruction etc. People seem to like Scott Lee. Maybe let him do a PPV sessioin etc. Lots could be done with PPV for extra money. I think more people would pay for lessons than a match. Have interact questions like the action report etc.

Anyone other than me ready for this?

This is TAR's goal.

To date we have failed miserably in convincing sponsors or advertisers that having their brand streamed live in front of thousands of individual viewers over several days at a time is at least as valuable as a full page ad in a magazine. Some companies (BCAPL, Diamond, OB Cues) have worked out small deals but nothing that would support a major challenge match with no PPV.

Everyone likes the idea of it, no one wants to pay hard cash for it.

We try to do as much free coverage as possible in order to promote our own brand but at the end of the day we have to pay for the gas and hotel somehow. DVD's do not do that yet.

The problem with time shifting right now is that the data base requirements for allowing access are pretty complex and beyond our capabilities currently. There is a solution we are working on through an external provider which may provide the ability for someone who buys the PPV to access the content at a later date.

So for us, at least for the near future, it is PPV or stop doing business.

I appreciate your position. I have purchased DVDs from you in the past and hopefully will be able to in the future, however, for me your PPV is not a product that works for me, I guess I lead too busy a life as I never seem to be home when these events occur.

If you had 1000 people to buy yearly memberships for $200, thats a lot of gas and time to build viewers. Use adsense from google or something to make cash from site links. Whats in the bag with links to cue, case maker etc. If these links are click, they pay you. Links from your site or orders and a % of order to you.... all kinds of things to try. Many options that is no cost to advertisers until your viewers support them.

It is funny really the money invested by players and the lack of people willing to advertise. In a tournament with 128 local guys for $3000 1st place I would guess average per player on cues and case would be $1000+ each. Thats $128,000+ walking around the room and companies don't want to advertise.

add sense is a joke for making money with billiard supplies.
The clicks dont pay anything more than a few cents. We have had like 40,000 plus page impressions(with ads on them) and 80 or 90 clicks and made 11 dollars.
