pre cat and post cat 314 shafts

Why are the -2 shafts garbage?

ferrule problems mostly. i've even heard of the holes bored into the shaft being too big and the shaft collapsing in on itself.

not sure if it matters but i hear there used to be a foam added in the pre -2 version and now they don't bother using it.

precats

never seen much problems from the precats but as a repair and cue maker i have to agree that the later versions have issues.

I think the foam might have been for sound dampening. I've noticed that some 314-2 shafts sound different than the older 314s. There is kind of a crack or what may be described as a whack sound when striking the cue ball. I prefer the quieter sound of the older ones myself.

this product is too popular, it might be poor workmanship....
I perfer old ones, new ones play weired tome......

Oldie but a Goodie

I seen the new ones and old ones taken apart. The old ones had the foam and more of it compared to the new ones.Even the foam in the new ones were almost look like shavings or dry flakes.Even when the ferrule from the new ones are removed the ferrule walls on the titan ferrules are real thin and the quality looked poor even on the splices looking into it with the ferrule off.If they ever bring the old ones back, even for a anniversary edition I think they would sell out!:)

I bought some of the very last pre-cat 314 blanks that were left. They were not cheap though. I was told that there were no more or sale.

You probably need to find someone who has one saved away and try to buy it from them.

Good luck!!

I have a minty mint pre-cat 314 with my 1st generation Predator model cue (butt made by JOSS in those days). They are all mint, but I like the 314-2 MUCH better. It has been perfect w/ no defects. I just keep the original 314 because it is original to the cue and if I got rid of it I would keep the 314-2 because it plays so good.

i'd be too paranoid that it was going to break to really let myself play with it

I don't want to be ignorant, but what is a united joint??

I do have a pretty good collection of older Predator cues, most of which have 2 shafts per cue and I could possibly sell one if the price was right, AND it had your United joint. The old shafts were usually 5/16-14, some 3/8-10 and they came with a black collar, or with a nickel/silver ring.

Awesome bro you look like the guy to talk to. the united joint is basically a compression fit 5-16/14. a standard 5-16/14 will work it just won't have the same compression fit.
