predator phenolic insert

If I wanted to make a shaft with a phenolic insert in the shaft like a pedator, what kind of phenolic would I use and what size is it? I looked on Atlas Billiard supply's website and found a few different kinds of phenolic rod and don't know which one to get. They all seem to be .562" dia. but I thought I remember the predator insert looking bigger than that.

Thanks for the info.

Using the Predator shaft as your example may not actually be what you're looking for.
What I mean is, using a 3/8 x 10 or Radial w/blk collar to illustrate this, the capped end-ring and the insert are all one piece. That means you'd be starting with 1" dia. solid rod.

If all you really want is a phenolic insert then the .562" linen rod is a good choice. Preferably wound (rolled & molded), not flat lam. You may want to 'skin' it slightly to open up a raw mtrl. surface for better bonding. Taking it down to .530" would make your tooling choices easy (17/32 = .531").

Fab. both the insert and drill the hole to 1/2" min. longer than the pin and you should be fine. I like to hand-fit the insert to the hole. I do this for all my shafts for my cues (3/8 x 10). This one modification will greatly enhance the hit.

PS. Thanx again Mr. H.

I sometimes Use either the natural or black linen ferrule rod, and It works well for Me. I mostly use It for 3/8-10 as KJ just mentioned, but I have also used the black to make 5/16-18 or 14 tpi inserts from in the past, and they worked well also.

As mentioned here, It will work fine If you just want the threads made from It, But If Your trying to replace or reproduce a pred. insert then It would take a larger diameter then the ferrule rod can provide for. Even the brass inserts on some are inserted into a larger piece of linen of some type that has been inserted into the shaft, and that has a face area that is larger in diameter then the ferrule rod.
