Predator Shaft Problem?

I bought two Predator 314-2's to match my cue. I do not leave my cue in my car, do not bag my cue around, and I do not break with my cue. I recently noticed a dull tinging sound when I hold my cue by the handle and slightly tap the forearm with my palm causing the cue to vibrate. Normally the cue just vibrates but like I said before, I noticed a dull tinging sound. I am not sure if it's coming from the joint, the tip, or the body of the shaft. I have a radial joint and the sound occurs with both shafts. One shaft is my back up shaft (never used) and my primary shaft.

I had two tips installed this past US Open. That is the last time I had anything done.

I am not sure what is wrong. Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

if it does it with both shafts id say its a butt problem... if the cue has a weight bolt id check that make sure its not lose...

First of all tapping your cue from the side at the joint is the wrong way to check and see if you have a problem. A cue is not a musical instrument it is designed to hit balls with the tip and pocket them, at no time will you ever come into a situation where your stick will hit anything that will make it vibrate from the side, SO STOP TAPPING IT FROM THE SIDE!!!

If the cue doesn't make that sound when your shooting don't worry about it!!

In most cases the sound you are hearing is caused by the edges of the Phenolic Joint rubbing together and this will only happen when tapped from the side, so don't worry about it and who ever told you to check your cue in this manner should not be listened to in the future, because their advice is not very good.

Sorry if I have come off a little strong on this subject but I hear about and see people doing this and worst all the time and it frustrates me!!!

Merry Christmas

You say you bought two 314-2's for your cue and then noticed this when tapping the side of the cue. I'm curious, do you still have your original shaft with the same type of joint? I'm NOT suggesting that tapping the side of the cue is an appropriate test, but I am personally curious if your original shaft makes the same noise. Also, does the butt section of the cue make the same noise if you tap the joint with no shaft on it?

I would think if you notice the noise when tapping just the butt of the cue that maybe your weight bolt is loose, as was already mentioned. You would probably notice something like that while shooting though. If you don't notice anything when shooting, what's it matter? It's sorta like people who won't play with a shaft with a slight taper roll, if it doesn't change your play, who cares? Just my personal opinion of course. :)

*edit* Haha, not another thread with Manwon and I talking about weight bolts ... oh no!

me too

:mad:i am having the same exact problem with my 314/2 FAT. its definatly the the shaft, ive put 5 dif shafts on the cue and it only happenes with that shaft. im contacting predator tomorrow on this issue, good luck!!!!

I have the same issue with my predator shaft. It doesnt affect play at all and the only way to get it to make that sound is as you said, by tapping the side of the cue. I just stopped doing it and it stopped bothering me. By the way what kind of joint is it?

I've had the same problem as well and the only thing I can come up with is that the tip I recently had put on is a crappy one because I tooke a good look at it and I can see that the tip seems to be loose in the middle of it and that's whats causing that noise but I could be wrong as well .

Well All know I've had problems with Predator shafts before , the first was my BK2 shaft snapped at the joint then had another shaft break right at the joint again with another bk2 shaft so I know how it is .

predator shaft problem

I agree with manwon. I have had lot of cues and a couple were as you described.

If its ok shooting with it don't worry about it. I believe a few cues have vibration resonance characteristics because of type of wood and materials match and struck from the side.

I am no cue maker but have good walking round sense. I asked a couple of well know cuemakers about this and they had no answer.

The cues I speak of were standard shafts. The vibration was more prevalent with the shafts on and less off. Different shafts made no difference.

I had one that would vibrate using extreme top and bottom english with power. That one bothered me to the point I got rid of it.

Conclusion, like Manwon said if it does't bother you during play quit hitting it from the side with your hand and you will soon forget about it, I did. JMOP
