This Year the World Pool Championship is going to be at Taiwan.
Keep in mind that the Taiwanese players are very strong.
Espesially when they play in Taiwan.
Fong Pang Chao, Ching Shun Yang, Hsia Hui Kai to name a few.
Also there would be a lot players from Phillipines, Korea, Japan in the qualification events....
For this year Ching Shun Yang is my favorite.
You can see some early betting odds at www.stanjames.com (go to Pool)
Reyes at 13/2, Bustamante 15/2, Yang 8/1, Archer and Pagulayan 12/1
Souquet at 28/1 and Van De Berg at 80/1

Archer is always a threat, but single elimination does not favour him, he is the king of winning from the b-side.

Pagulayan has no chance in my mind, he will be far too hungry to win considering he should have won last year if he did not shoot a bad finals.

Yang has a real good chance, he is always deep in the tourney and is ready to break through.

Busta has a good chance, he dogged it last year to lose, he is going to make sure not to blow any easy shot like that again.

Reyes got beat last year on an amazing kick, he has a chance but I don't think he is the top favorite in my mind.

Van de Berg can do well, I would be surprised if he won.

Souquet for some reason I don't see doing it, not sure why but I dont see him making the final 8.

Hohmann has no chance, he is not going to sneak in again this year under peoples noses, he is now on the radar and he is going to get shot down.

Davis has no chance for all you Davis fans. =P

Not sure who is going form Canada but if Edwin Montal is going I think he could make the final 8 and would be an awesome darkhorse with huge odds for a bet to win.

I think that if Hohmann shoots as well as he did last year, he definately has a chance. If you really think about it, most of these guys can win if they get in to dead punch all throughout the tournament. All of them can run racks, Efren can lose to a no-name if Efren never gets a chance to shoot. I have a feeling that Strickland is gonna do it this year, however. If the crowd can piss him off enough, he can win the whole tournament easilly. That's exactly what he needs. Notice how last year, after he apologized to the referee and started being nice to his opponents, he started playing worse and worse. He needs something to fire him up to win, IMO.

I agree with you that if Earl can get the crowd into it he has a good chance to win. Problem is if it is in Taiwan there is a language barrier and they are not likely going to be very vocal fans. Therefore I see Earl getting shot down with a lack of emotion in a simple set.

I think predicting the winner of this is an exercise in futility. That said, however, I would be very please to see either Earl or Efren win, and even more pleased to have the final be Earl vs. Efren.

I agree with catscradle. Archer is playing really good right now but I think Earl and Efren in the finals. I believe Efren is stepping back up on his game for 2 reasons. He has seen the improvement in Archer's game and he has read this forum where they said he's done with his dominance in men's pool. Just remember it's the nay-sayers who started this. {I think you guy's have ticked him off} Sam

Chin Shun Yang (sp?). He will be fired up by his home crowd and has got to be one of the favorites to win the title. I really like his game: monster (controlled) break, doesn't get too fancy on position shots, and has good imagination.

In fact, since it is being held in Taiwan, I think the local players and Filipino boys will dominate due to their better knowledge of the local conditions. Very different weather there to anything in the US/Eurpore.

Immonen is tough if he gets going. Steaming hot at Cardiff in 2001 and can easily repeat that !!
