preparing for new Simonis 860 cloth

I got my cloth in and did my rails on Friday. First let me say I earned a whole new level of respect for you guys who do this for a living. It only took me 6 hours to do 6 rails at this rate I sure couldn't make a living doing this.. lol
I let the frame and slates sit for two weeks before installing the cloth on the slate and used the time to repalce the cushions. That was the easy part ... but covering the rails ... I think I'll send them out next time.

Rick

The 2 rows of staples on the corners are a dead giveaway huh? Yes I did have some problem, Now I figure I have probably 24 hours of love labor into the job but it was worth it for me... I have the time right now and ALWAYS WANTED TO take it apart and put it back together.

I will say that it is amazing when you do it yourself that now I look at it and know where every flaw is... before I just wondered...lol

Crash your right if I ever want the rails done again I will strip them and send them to one of these guys, this way I can save the professional's time on the breakdown and let him spend his time on the rebuild..

Rick I do appreciate you help and advice and how quickly you guys got my products out the door.

Pooltable 911 Pat you were the first guy to respond and let me know this site was a friendly place where an amateur could get some professional advice. Thanks

This site is amazing, my pockets look 10x better now because of seeing Glen's method or is it perfectpockets method of finishing a pocket. My son wanted to play as soon as the pockets were stretched and I insisted on putting in the Pipe tape finish. After seeing it in your pictures I had to do it. My son said Dad that's going to take you another 2 hours... He was just about on the mark but I am very happy with the finised look of the table.

Thanks all I couldn't have done it without you!

I can tell from one of those pics you had trouble stretching the cloth but not too bad for a rookie.

Ehh, the staples are kind of overkill but for a first timer if you got the rails covered correctly and look good - well nobody sees the staples. Not at all knocking the work as overall it appears you did a pretty good job and working with 860 is not the easiest cloth to work with for someone that is not in the table trade.

I was referring to stretching the cloth on the slate and noticed the contortion of the simonis logo in this pic.

See now thats the difference between an amateur and a professional...lol attention to detail. I rolled the corner in slightly as I finished the pocket.

I think that was more a matter of my stretch into the corner pocket than the overall table stretch. We did get it to stretch 2 -2 1/2" across and lengthwise and theres no rocks under the cloth.

That Simonis is much faster than my old cloth. I can actually make a ball on the break now.. surprised!

Thanks Rick, now I am not going to be able to sleep at night with that added to my list of mistakes under the rails.

Just kidding!

Actually a correction to my previous post -
even some people in the table trade have trouble with simonis.
You did fine. Assuming the table plays to your satisfaction you can sleep easy.
Pretty good job on the edge collars too.

Thanks Jack,

I must admit you prompted me to watch the video a few more times. I didn't have a problem working with the 3m10 for stretching the cloth. As a matter of fact the time period allowable for working with the contact is not bad for an amateur like me. It allowed me to pull and set then pull some more in areas that I still had some slack. I was very happy with the 860 cloth and also the adhesive. I did get some glue bleed in one of the corner pockets as a result of reapplying glue when I did not have enough in the packet area.

I would say the toughest part of the job for me was the side pockets. After all was said and done I got some great tips from you guys and I thank you all for your frank and honest advice.

Here are some pictures of my installation of the cloth, pockets and pocket liners.

It's not more difficult other then it tends to get a little stringy on application.
Actually easier IMO and no overspray to deal with.

Did you use spray glue for the side and end pockets?

LCCS

I used 3m 10 and a 3" paint roller on the edges and the pockets. I ordered 1 quart and used only 1/2 of it for the cushion install and cloth install.

Now I can use some of the leftovers to reglue the headliner in my boat this summer. I have tried spray glue on that before and it lets loose in the heat.

Thanks Rick "all in good fun"

I overdid the staples .. I know.. I probably didn't need the corner staples as they were blind stapled all the way around. I used 1/4 staples in the blind area and 1/2 inch on the ends for my peace of mind. Didn't think they were going to be visible in the corners of the leather.. now I know..

It plays awesome.

Yes it was fun..

If any of you guys ever get to syracuse for a delivery or install and need an extra set of hands let me know. I am now an expert on taking them apart and pulling staples.... I'll leave the finish work to you but would be glad to be your gofer for the day just to see a professional at work.

John
Looks good, kinda fun isn't it?

If you use spray adhesive on the pockets next time, it will come out better and will be easier. Thanks, Ron
