hello,

please PM with a price quote if you are interested in performing the following work.

I would really like to have jump break cue butt built. I just returned from Hawaii on vacation last week. I was in the countryside and bought a nice piece of curly spalted koa wood to have a cue built from. I have a piece of ivory for the joint that I had been using as a joint protector (it has been turned and tapped for a 3/8x10 joint) and I have a Mezz radial pin wd 700shaft that I would like used. I have attached a picture to show the materials

My specs-
19oz
Shaft supplied
Flat faced radial pinned ivory joint ? ivory supplied if you can use it
Ebony forearm with a jump joint above handle
Koa handle ? wood supplied
Black phenolic butt plate
Rings at joint / A joint and above butt plate to match shaft or cuemakers choice.

thanks!

Ryan

looks like that Ivory joint has quite a taper on it . might be to small at one end to use, it needs to be larger than the shaft or the same size to use it or you will have to turn the shaft coller down to match.

Mezz doesn't do Radial unless it's been re-tapped. If it's a Wavy-Joint, that's 3/8x9.

J/B cue

I wouldn't want to buld a jump/break cue with ivory joint. You won't have the joint long unless you make it a sleeve rather than a solid joint.
I also don't think any "spalted" wood is suitable for cues. Especially those that are going to be hit hard. Spalting is rot that has been stopped by cutting the lumber. The cue could split or break at any time through one of the spalting lines. Pretty stuff, but take care.
I really don't mean to be so negative. I work with Koa alot and it is truely beautiful. It does make beautiful cues and hits nice, but not spalted.

Ditto. And don't try using a 3/8-10, very likely you mess up the thread.

well the shaft fits on my radial pinned butt of my PFD just fine...so I assume it will work and for that matter I dont care if its plugged and retapped for 3/8x10

as far as the wood goes...thats why I would choose to use the koa for the handle of the cue, not the forearm- the wood is not very spalted, so I think its stable enough for a handle, but it can be cored if that makes the cuemaker happy...just would like to use it for a cue to "remember" my trip to Hawaii.

thanks for the input all

you could core the Koa,which would probably be better anyway.it isn't vwery strong wood to begin with and being splated doesn't help either.

Except that is green wood and not kilned.
It will almost surely shrink if made into a cue now .
