Hustlers, because theres always a dummy out there who just doesn't know when theyve been beat. Theres a cap for pros.

Talk to ANY pro player today and they'll tell you how hard it is on the road. Everything is getting more expensive, room, eating, gas, etc. Hustling is NOT gambling. Hustling is making a money game you can't lose, usually with someone you could give a whole lot of weight to. Many of the pro players still gamble, but usually the ones who play with them don't have to lose. There just ain't a whole lotta suckers any more. If somebody unknown shows up somewhere and wants to gamble, somebody else shows up on az and wants to know who knows the guy, how good does he play, can he give weight to so and so? Pool isn't like it was many, many years ago, though a lot of people who don't know any better still believe the myths.

You gotta remember that the hustler also LOSES money and his backer/backers get a cut. It's really hard to determine exactly how much money any one particular hustler makes 'cause just like the typical Vegas gambler, they never let on that they lose money. How many people have you heard come back from Vegas or Reno or Atlantic City, etc. that always say "yeah, I came back with more than I took" or "I broke even". Yea, R-I-I-I-G-G-G-H-H-H-T

Let's see, odds are that a pro player is going to spend most of his time scratching around for a stray buck to stay afloat. With a hell of a lot better shortstops than used to be common the gambler has a rough row to hoe too. The hustler, man he has it made!
The hustler comes into town, makes a nice score, and slides right back out again after spending a night or three living high with dollars everywhere and good looking ladies hanging all over him. Well not exactly. He is the stranger from out of town so setting up someone for real dollars is tough to begin with. Then if you win the cash you have to collect and get out of town with it. The pigeon you scored from has friends in the pool room usually, including the owner. When things get ugly, and it is only a matter of when for a hustler not if, you are the one without friends.
Aside from the risk of dings and puncture wounds, when things really get hairy and the law shows up you are the one that came here and caused trouble. You are the one presumed to be in the wrong so you will be spending time in the Graybar Hotel and wiring for dollars to try to get loose since anything you had was lost during the uproar or confiscated as evidence.
Here is a secret about the "good ol' days". They weren't really all that good without a hell of a lot of selective memory and editing. Every gambler and hustler remembers the big scores, very few remember or talk about the losses or sleeping in your car if you were lucky enough to have one. That means in the car when it is ten degrees outside or a hundred and whether the car is a Caddy or a Chevette. An occasional night in a car isn't a big deal, neither is an occasional missed meal. It gets mighty old in a hurry when it is a daily thing though.
There are at least a dozen people on this board that could make decent scores on a regular basis hustling. However all of them have been there, done that, and know that almost anything is an easier living. Chase "easy money" and you will earn every penny of it when the final score is tallied.

Oh, and the $20M he pulls in in prize money isn't bad either...might even make a buck or two playing against others on the side (Michael Jordan, Griffey Jr., Barkley; all like to make TINY wagers on the course, and he's played with 'em quite a bit ). But, if you can make buds with those typea guys, I'm sure they'd like to wager with ya in pool too....
I agree with poolbum to a certain level, somebody like Stevie Moore has gambled forever and now he has to spot the world or play someone else game ( 1 pocket ) to get a game, cause most know they can't beat him for the cash. I think tournament play will make Stevie more money now than gambling, and I think he will get a good sponsor if he wonts that. Great player and nice guy, wish him luck at turning stone Leonard
