IMO a good nickname should evolve on its own. I hate it when someone decides a player needs a nickname and manufactures some WWF sounding thing like "The Terminator".

Best nicknames link something unique about the person, his place of origin, a cleaver play on his or her name, etc.

They should also be something that is always identified with one particular individual. Cornbread Red, Omaha John, Boston Shorty, Jew Paul, Bugs Rucker, Titanic Thompson... Whom else would we think of when these legendary names are mentioned?

FWIW I will always be known as "Waterford Danny", because I was unbeatable for about three weeks on a bar box in the only bar in the one-horse town I grew up in. :p

Freddy the beard gave me my nickname during the hall of fame dinner speech his was giving, calling me "The Hooligan" :rolleyes:
