Pro players still using wood shafts

Has anyone done the legwork to figure out how many players that are 750 Fargo and better are still using wood shafts compared to say carbon fiber shafts. Post a link if you have found the research posted somewhere.

I’m not sure, but if I was a pro player over 30 years old then I probably wouldn’t switch unless there was a LOT of sponsor money incenting me to.

Yeah I was thinking the same. If you have spent almost your entire life calibrating your brain and mechanics to compensate using maple then it would seem like you would be taking years of experience and throwing it out the window if you were to go to carbon shafts.

750+ will be hard to track. Top 100 in the world starts at 770ish. Just take a look at the top 20 and there’s maybe only 3 players? SVB, Chang, and maybe Fedor. Go into the top 50 and you can definitely add at least 2 more with Skylar and De Luna. In summation it doesn’t really seem like it’s taking over at the very top. Not that playing with a particular kind of cue would really affect them anyways.

I'm sure there would be a break-in period
especially with a whole new shaft/cue
but I wonder for pros, what that would entail?
and how individualized that process might be
first time I picked up a cf cue
I could shoot ok out the box
I suck tho:p

Matt....

I think this question can be answered more accurately by talking with the pros. Thoughts about Not switching or switching to ld, from the perspective of someone who's not a pro is more opinion than fact.

I'm not knocking yah, but I know I'm able to do things with my ld wood shaft, that I've ever been able to do with pure maple because of less flex.

I know Busty still uses maple as of 4 or so yrs ago, and I highly Doubt, he would switch ''for sponsorship money''.

Finding the highest quality maple, with the right grain, density and other factors is VERY difficult.

I like wood shafts

since the jump and break got major industry support

how about a putter cue?

You know for shots that are extremely close, if the cue has a closer CM center mass, I can control short distance shots better

and I was hoping for a thinner cue so I can aim above the horizontal on some shots, think object ball contact followed with jump dynamics for either CB or OB depending on preferences

I reviewed the equipment specs but I am mostly an at home player.

And another thread brought back some old ideas.

single piece cue made of wood.

maybe a filipino might try to make it out of their local resources, I've already tried a few I like the light weight, definitely helps for torsion control.

From what i've seen the benefits of CF are: dent free surface, SUPER slick finish, straight and long lasting. I've hit about four CF shafts and didn't find playability to be much different than my Mezz wood shaft. Pros get these things free so i wouldn't read to much into who uses what. Quite a few top-class players still use lumber.

is this how businesses defund the lumber industry?

is it too soon for that?

I figure the way I phrased my response made it clear that I didn’t have the information the OP was requesting and that my response was to proffer an opinion related to the topic instead. I’m not trying to represent anything I said as fact. Was there a reason you thought that needed spelling out?

My take on it is that any mature pro has spent a lifetime tuning their brain and arm to whatever style of playing cue they use. Making any switch is fundamentally an unnecessary adjustment for their game. It more likely has the potential to cause them to play worse for a while. I’m certain a professional can easily overcome that curve but it could still sneak up on them at a critical moment, e.g. a key shot in a hill-hill game. It could affect their money. That’s why I assume the only incentive for them would be enough compensation to cover any hypothetical opportunity cost.

I bet Busty would switch “for a LOT of sponsorship money”. At this stage of his career, I doubt anyone is offering him that kind of money.

Today's players are equipment specialists.

Earl has some strong commentary in the filler kazakis match.

He makes it sound like the today's game is like playing checkers.

Meaning Earl played chess, and I know he doesn't think Effren gets lucky. However other players, he is brutally honest on.

makes it feel like today's pool is just promotion for equipment

Varies a lot from player to player. I heard that SVB had no adjustment issues when he switched to the Cynergy. Of the cf shafts i tried the Cuetec played/felt/sounded the best. Played like really good wood with a little less squirt.

You’re probably right.

OR... He was paid a LOT of money to say that.

First off I do not understand what a Fargo Rating is, to me a Pro is making their entire living off pool, playing. hustling, tree hong, and live a good life. Or working a job like fill in the blank, and Pool is were they make over 51% of income.

Pro, and Instructor get free Cue, Chalk, Tip, Shafy, some even get paid to endorse and use.

Skill is what they are good at pool, not tools, they like Moscini would be great with house Cue, Willard, sandpaper, and chalk. That about all you need plus skill.

Matt, having played and beat 1/2 of the pros in match play till the 90's is this.

I'm able to get ALLOT more spin transfer to the obj. ball AND waaaaaaaaay more spin on the cue ball than I ever did with the best maple shafts during my prime years.

I appreciate your comments.

Professional players/top players can play with/adjust to anything.

When you find a cue you like, just don't change. (Easier said than done, I'm the king of switching - but admire those who are smart enough to stick)

Instead of Fargo rating lets use post count.

If a player doesn't post in instagram or AZBillliards or youtube, then their popularity rating is zero.

Fargo rate is useless without LARPing from tournament action.

T Hohmann has instructional stuff and so does R Eckert, they have a PopRa of 2. Popularity Rating (PopRa) you can suggest a different name.

As for the women their social media is more like who cares about what happens on the pool table. Just relax already. The important events happen and just move on.

Ok cocobolo think of fargo rate as a username. All users with a 7 play too much pool. All users with less than a 7 are not bots.
