So who are they? I remember hearing/reading, Shane Van Boening was shooting in BCA leagues and Ike Runnels was shooting in APA leagues. Who else do you know of?

A guy who used to be in my APA division moved to my area from NYC. His APA team in NYC included Jennifer Barretta back before she was very good. He said he used to coach her matches when she was an APA SL3.

Jennifer Barretta. I watched all 4 hours of the 9-ball Open last night on ESPN....and they did one of those "Behind the Cue" interviews with her. She said she got started by joining an APA league.

Damn it, damn it, damn it.....beat me to it!!

Everybody starts somewhere.

It's like people jumping up and down, excited about a "new" band coming out, who, unknown to them, likely has three albums prior and has been touring for years.

Everybody pays their dues, and pool is no exception.

Who is this guy? I had her on my APA team years back.

John Macalino. I'm pretty sure he said he knows you, too (obviously you would know). He and Liz and Bobby all played in my APA in-house league until recently. Also Doug and Christina (Asian couple, I don't know their last names but I think you do) both played a few sessions ago.

Yeah, they're all very good friends of mine. I went to college with John & Liz (who remains title-holder for nicest person ever) and Doug & Christina I know from NYC pool scene though I've known them a very long time now.

Good times!

I went the other way. I started out playing for money, played in some pro tourneys in the 70's and 80's and made my way to the amateur leagues in the 90's. And it's been all downhill since. :)

I like to say I started out a rack boy (true) and will end up one too (also true).

Yeah, I have to agree that Liz is as nice as people get. John and Bobby both also score very high on the friendliness-toward-everyone scale.

Small world after all, huh?

Nick Varner won some collegiate titles before he turned pro. He is to this day the only player to win a collegiate title and the U.S. Open.

Just to make things clear, Jenn was actually a 4 throughout her first year in the APA. We both won the regional tournament that year and competed in Vegas back in 2000. That was the final year the Singles Event was split by gender and I remember she did pretty well. By the end of her first year, she was a 5 and we split up the team when she was on the verge of becoming a 6 shortly after that. She went on with another team and continued to do well and quit altogether after her team went to Vegas.

I mean, she was ALWAYS serious and made it clear she wanted to compete in the WPBA back then. Describing her as a "4" is misleading since she was playing every day, taking lessons, always improving. APA night was really just the night we all got out to have fun.

I can think of many around the midwest who have played and in some cases (like Ike) still do play in leagues.

People I remember from Vegas in May include Jeremy Jones, Alex Pagulayan, Jon Kucharo, Larry Nevel, Shane Van Boening. Tommy Donlon from the UK played as well. And don't forget The One here on AZ (Craig Riley). I'm sure there are many, many more.

Danny Basavich played league here in Fargo for six or seven weeks in 2001, though they left that part out of the book ;-)

List didn't seem to be too big did it Heath?:D... But it will grow when you turn pro. Can I travel with you? I can carry your Al Capone for you...lol
