Pro Rivalries

I remember at a pro tournament, held just after Amateur Nationals, where my roomie, Kimberly Kirk had just won her 3rd AN title, we had to fill out a bio. I saw KK fill out hers...Amateur National Champion, 1997, Amateur National Champion, 1998, Amateur National Champion, 1999 (Dates are probably incorrect) and I looked over at my blank piece of paper and wrote, "I can beat Kimberly!" ROFL.

Now thats funny Linda lol.

it seems that from many of my accustats from the 80 and 90's, many players have this thing about sigel. the funniest part to me is, you hear guys swear that sigel gets more rolls than anyone else (or used to). now, maybe this is a whole thread in itself, but sigel DID NOT get more rolls. if a good player ever tells me that another good player seems to roll lucky everytime against him, i just think highly of that player that supposedly got "lucky." mind you, im talking about people that have played over long periods here.

these guys are smart, i mean guys like sigel know that if you gamble on a 1 ball shot vs gamble on a 7 ball shot, the odds of getting safe on the one ball shot are like 3 or 4 times better. people dont look at it this way, and thats why they think there are lucky players, but its just not true in the long run, and for sure isnt true in sigel's case.

I've been watching pool a long time and my conclusion is that the good players get the rolls. And the bad players don't. Think about it.

I agree, the saying is 'the better you play the luckier you get'.

I agree...but I hate when the loser uses rolls to explain away the match. Why can't they just say " so and so out played me, and I'll get him next time" or something cool like that?!

Good rolls are a direct result of years of hard practice!

over a long period of time, like 10 or 20 years? i can see if you are talking about maybe 1 tournament. wow. anyway, guess it really doesnt matter whose right or wrong in this case.

oh, and i have thought about it, maybe too much.

in any case, thanks for the input.

Rolls happen more easily, I think, when the ball is moving at or maybe a bit faster than pocket speed. That's one. Then there's the roll that just eases into position on certain two way shots. That's two. Then there's the roll that goes four rails and pots in the corner, due to missing the pocket a bit on the inside and coming around and around and .... potting. That's three. All of those are more or less "predictable"... then add in the element of luck, which probably grows with time, and.... you get the picture. The better players tend to get the rolls. I agree.

considering the rolls or luck subject, forgive me, but im really not even sure what people are saying at this point??

i guess i define luck as when a player has obviuosly lost control of the balls like on a kick or a missed ball at hard speed and then gets a hook out of it or a safety. im not talking about smart shots that obviuosly had a two way element.

considering this, at first thought i would think the luck percentage would actually favor bad players because when they miss balls they go all over the place. if a good player misses a ball it will more often be hanging.

anyway, maybe its not even worth discussing. i will always stand by the statement that no player gets any more rolls than any other over the long haul however.
