i feel like a dummy for asking this question because im sure everybody else on here knows the answer. can someone explain to me what a pro taper is. i know it has something to do with the shaft because a cue that im thinking about buying has a "15 inch pro taper".is that good or not?

A "15 inch pro taper" would mean that the front 15 inches of the shaft is the same diameter or very little change during the first 15 inches. As far as whether that is good or not is a matter of preference. I would not want mine same diameter over about 12" but if it is a laminated shaft, or a coated shaft like Cue-Tech or Scorpion then the longer taper keeps it from being so stiff. With regular maple it would be a little more whippy than I would want. But that is just my preference. Good luck with the cue.

As cueman said it might be a little whippy with the shaft being the same diameter from the ferrule to 15" up the shaft... but that might depend on the size of the tip to begin with. A 15" pro taper on a 12mm shaft is probably pretty whippy but might not be on a 13mm shaft.

As a beginnner you probably dont' need a LONG pro taper like 15" as you would probably want to have your bridge within 8" to 10" from the cb. Every teacher will tell you that your bridge MUST be about 8" to 10" from the cb even though you'll see pros with very long bridge's. A pro with a real long bridge might want a 15" or even longer Pro taper (that's why they call it a pro taper) but you and I are just fine with a 12" and a 8" bridge. More control!

Tapers

13" to 15" is the range for Pro tapers, and 15" could almost be considered
'extended Pro taper'. 13" was considered the normal Pro taper for years and years.

But, as strokes lengths have lengthened over the years, so have the taper lengths. 6-8" was considered the normal stroke length 45 years
ago, but today you see stroke lengths clear up to 12". Watch Django play sometime. Most of the filapinos that hit the Pool scene had longer stroke lengths.
