Problem With Finish

I'm In The Middle Of Spraying An Old Brunswick Conversion Cue.
The Last Two To Three Inches Near The Joint Will Not Hold Any Finish Whatsoever. Rest Of The Cue Is Fine. As Soon As I Start Doing My Final Sand, It Comes Off Like Jelly.
Any Ideas?
I've Resanded It Twice Now, Wiped Clean With Laquer Thinner. Still Same Result.
I'm Using Dupont Chroma Clear

I would suggest wiping a coat of five minute eapoxy on the cue before spraying it. The Chroma Clear will stick to the epoxy. Sounds like there is something in the wood that is having a reaction with your finish. Super glue and some laquer products will reject urethane finishes. If your epoxy sticks then you will be okay. Finishing too soon after dipping in Nelsonite can cause adhesion problems also.

Finish Problems

Chris, I Forgot To Mention, That I Used A Thin Coat Of Natural Stain On Cue Too. Maybe It's The Stain Rejecting Finish. Still Can't Figure Out Why Just On That Section Of Cue Though.
I Just Sanded Whole Cue Back Down To Bare Wood And I'll Try Again.
Thanks, Brent

hey brent

the epoxy should do the trick. also i would recommend using an automotive wax and grease remover between steps and definitely prior to spraying. i also use it first thing when starting a refinish. it will not attack epoxy or any finish product that i have ever used. laquer thinner will. in the ppg brand it is called dx-330. good stuff. hope this helps. mark

Brent,

I'm sure your already aware, but Your not trying to cover delrin by any chance are you? Just about everything I have used sticks to that linen, If that's what you used, then probably something on it rejecting the finish like your thinking. The worst i have seen with it would be maybe chipping on the very edge instead of the whole joint. May have to be carefull with getting white spots under the clear also, but that seems to happen more with the ca's. If you use a compound or wax between coats, it can cause bonding issues also.

Please let us know what happens with it.
