Production vs Custom

I am fairly new to the game and have been asking a few questions on here lately. All have been answered wonderfully.

Ok, I like to watch alot of matches on youtube and have noticed some pros use a production cue mated with a LD shaft and some just use a LD shaft on a custom butt. My question is: Do the pros just use these combos because they are paid too? If they had to choose, do do think they would play with a Scruggs, Sugartree....etc? Are these LD shafts the real deal or just alot of marketing hype? Predator claims they have spent so much money on research and I believe them to an extent, but I also feel alot of it is just marketing hype. And honestly, I would rather be holding a cue made here in the USA instead of China.

These questions all root from the fact that I will be buying a new cue in the next few weeks. I am trying to decide if I want a custom cue with the stock shaft, or a custom cue with a LD shaft, or just a nice production cue with an LD or stock shaft. If buying production, I would buy a schon or ob cue. And custom I have no clue, I have 700 to spend and that seems to be enough to buy a wide range of good players

Its mostly marketing hype with a bit of sound science thrown in.

Truthfully, Predators do have very little deflection. However, the tradeoff is that they get kind of a hollow feel due to being, well, hollow. Many players, especially the more traditional ones, prefer the good solid hit of a standard, well built custom over predators. A lot of younger pros seem to gravitate toward the Predator and similar shafts.

I think, like other things, this is mostly preference. If a cue feels good to you, that is worth at least a ball as far as your game goes. If you switch to a cue that has significantly different deflection properties from what you are used to, your game might drop a few balls in the time it takes to get used to that cue. The secret is to just try everything you can and find out what you like on your own.

Masayoshi is right, it's mostly preference. Just find what is comfortable and feel confident for you and then stick with it. Then practice, practice, practice...:thumbup:

each shaft has deflection- and you will need the same time with any time of shaft until your skill will increase :-)
the last 100 years were shot with non-laminated/LD shafts. Now everywhere ld shafts are coming up. Just choose a cue which feels fine for you-not matter what another person tells you!

And pro s will play with the stuff they re payed for-it s the easiest money they could get. And furthermore they usualy can tell the company to *tune* their cue as long until they re satisfied with it.

Im also sure, that many *pro s* (sponsored pros) would player perhaps with a cue what they would like more- but like always....money makes the world go round :)
 
All marketing BS for new players to the game like you. Mostly for those that are looking for that magic feather and are gullible enough to believe there is a secret or shortcut to becoming a world beater.
 
As everyone else has said, shoot with what's best for you. Pool is unlike sports like golf or bowling, where technology has enabled the average Joe to hit the ball over 300 yards or bowl several 300 games. There is no secret technology that will pocket balls for you or get perfect position. No matter what cue you use, you still have to do those things yourself.

Edit: But, FWIW, I am a "traditionslist" and like the "old school" solid hitting cue, as well as the "classic" look. Nothing fancy.
