When a Custom Cue has Fancy Ringwork at the Joint and Shafts that all
align when both the Butt & Shaft are screwed together called what.....?

I always thought It was called Indexing but I am not sure if this is correct

I have owned several High End cues and the Ringwork has not always
aligned up when the Butt & Shaft were put together depending on the
Cuemaker.

I guess what I am asking is what the proper term is for this and if it is
something fairly easy to do or is there special knowledge needed by the Cuemaker to make Custom Ringwork always align when a cue is screwed together.

I personally Always thought it Really hurt the overall look of a custom cue
when the ringwork did not align.

Any information as Always is Greatly Appreciated.

Paul, Indexing or the use of an Indexer is used when making ring billets.

I would think that all cue makers strive to make sure that the rings line up at all areas when the ring packs are glued up.

I've heard a couple of arguments the other way where it doesn't matter much. Myself, I figure that if someone is spending huge amounts on a cue, the ring work better line up. Any amount of money for that matter.

Probably the fanciest cue that has the most ornate ring work is on my JD cue. Not the most expensive but she be pretty. Joel did his best to line up the rings. A tad off in one place but so little, you ain't gonna see it from the highway. Its a player and not a Closet Queen.

The only place that I can see changing is with the use of a 3/8ths X 10 or a Radial pin where the shaft has no insert. With tightening of the shaft over time, you run the chance that the ring work on the shaft will skew a little as the wood threads wear a little.

To me, if that happens, its no biggy. For others it might be cause for concern.
 
You could call it indexing, but simply saying the rings are in alignment would do as well.
When I built cues I used a pencil line drawn along the cues center line, from end to end. This was done while the cue was in the white (not screwed and glued together). When it came time to put the cue together it was an easy task to orient the rings (bushka rings, for instance) to the appropriate position on the cue.
As an example: If you wanted bushka rings at the A joint, and the top and bottom of the butt sleeve, then a good start point for this reference line might be between the bases of two points in the prong. :smile:

If you see missaligned rings on a custom cue it means the person who built it was sloppy, inexperienced, or both. Either way is inexcusable. :smile:
