Pros and Cons Gambling

if it isnt affecting you then dont vote to ban it.
many people have been killed or hurt from being hit with pool cues. doesnt mean that they need to regulate them.

when something affects others negatively then it has to be looked at to be regulated or banned. and decided without prejudice.
such as smoking in public.

After working at the racetrack for years in the pari-mutuel department (that means gambling), my copious observations lead to one conclusion... gambling hurts problem gamblers and can make many a family/dependent suffer. I could tell stories, but I don't feel like dwelling on that side of life. For most, gamble away, probably will be just fine. Some will ruin their lives and traumatize their kids. Your mileage will vary.

The reason I do not gamble::

I have plenty of wealth and income
What I could win by gambling would not even show up as a rounding error on my income tax statement.
I could lose $100,000 and not even remember it the next day
I could win $100,000 and not remember it 30 seconds after it was handed to me
Thus, there is no incentive for me to gamble
It does not add enjoyment to the game
It does not add pleasure to my playing

And I don't care if others do the same or they do differently.
I also understand this perspective. The amount of money I can win or lose at a pool room will not affect my life in any material way, one way or another.

Here is an item of interest for this thread...an artifact from my racetrack days, now hanging on the wall of my new pool room.

IMO, it’s not “gambling” that hurts pool’s image. It’s the deception of “hustling” that hurts it, along with the seedy image of halls being dark dungeon-like places as depicted by popular cultural references. Golf is played outdoors in the sunshine on beautifully landscaped green grass fields. What comes to mind when you think of a pool hall? Drinking, dark rooms, deception, participants beware lest you get hoodwinked by someone hiding their speed.

If it were straight up gambling, no, it wouldn’t have nearly the negative association. It’s hustling that gives it the bad reputation.

Gambling at pool is not just about money. It's also about testing yourself and being able to perform under pressure.

Some people have too big an ego and can't handle losing, no matter how much wealth they have.

Watch someone gamble, win, lose, and you will find out what kind of person they really are.

Want to know if you can make that key shot when it really counts?
There's only one way to find out.

People gamble on every sport ... why is pool a victim

here take your pick

just cause joe bob walks into a poolroom and wants to gamble pool why does that make pool ruined because of gambling .... its just what it is ... if you dont want to gamble then dont
I'm not taking either side of this, I've already explained I basically don't care. However, there is a huge difference between putting $100 on the Lakers to win and $100 on you yourself against another individual, especially where weight is involved.

i dont see the difference in both you are just making a bet on the outcome of an event.

matter of fact all of us bet every day much more than that. we bet the insurance company that our house will burn down or we get in a car accident and they bet we dont.

even some take life insurance and bet they die before old age and the insurance company bets you dont.

You don't see the difference between betting on a game where you are (and have control over) one of the opponents and a game where that isn't true?

And no need to get off in the weeds with insurance...even if you realize how shakey your position is in the actual topic being discussed. I am not that easily distracted .

There is a reason we don't allow pro baseball players to bet on a game they are playing in...a rule true in pretty much every organized sport on the planet, except of course one.

Last night a friend said that gambling on pool in the usa "hurts" the sport.
I understand why this is often claimed, but is it true?
Does gambling "hurt" poker? Or Blackjack? Does gambling "hurt" football?

I love to play One Pocket for $10 or $20 a game. Maybe some golf on the snooker table. These games don't really play "right" without a little wager to keep from shooting silly shots.
I think a gambling on pool has given it a unique culture and history. The name "pool" itself comes from people "pooling" their money together to wager on the games. I've loved hearing the old gambling stories from Ronnie Allen, Luther Lassiter, and Grady Matthews ect.
Hearing something like Chohan is playing someone for $10k or whatever makes me want to see the action.
For me a little gambling makes this a unique and fun sport.
The money is a way of keeping score and ensuring you get your opponent's best game.

Anyone who says they play as hard for fun versus needing to win 3 games to 1 for $1,000 has never tried it.

I see the difference between team and individual sports more. Team sports it seems more frowned upon individual sports it seems more the norm. Golfers, Fighters, Jockeys, Darts, Pool, etc.

No, the difference is being one of the competitors. The possibility for shenanigans is the difference. If I am the quarterback in the Superbowl, do you want me betting that the other team will win?

If we are playing for 1000 a set....you aren't going to play your best to win?
Yes you will.
Unless you are laying down and playing the 🍋 .

That works with seasoned players trying to develop.

It doesn't work for broke pool players that were forced to play on a sponsorship deal.

That just keeps them broke and in debt, its a type of free labor.
