Pro's stroke on sub-standard equiptment

Love watch Ralf Souquet play but I was wondering how effective his 'soft' touch stroke would be on sub-standard equiptment. And by 'sub-standard' I mean, regular, well used/abused, pool room tables. Not the super clean and fast cloth just setup that day for the tournament.

Would someone who hits harder like Dennis Hatch, Larry Nevel, or Billy Palmer have more overall success in pool rooms? Does equiptment somewhat dictate the type of stroke you should use? Some advice given to me by a very respectable player in my area was to learn how to shoot 90% of my shots with the same 'medium' speed stroke. Only hit soft or hard if absolutely necessary.

I wouldn't classify Ralf's stroke as "soft touch." I mean, he can hit them plenty hard on any equipment.

Maybe I'm wording myself wrong. (I don't get to see him playing on anything other than tournament equiptment so maybe he does play exactly the same in pool halls.)

I believe that Souquet's 'soft' style is extremely effecient when it comes to moving the CB. A lot of that has to do to the speed of the cloth. i.e. A fast cloth is easier to draw on, forward stroke on, and easier to 'drift' on a punch stroke as well. I'm sure when Simonis 860 came out it had some effect on speed control. Old school players look like they had more of a firmer/stand up style of shooting that compensated for the slower cloth and mud balls.

Well, just a thought anyway.

i believe the stroke you see him using is a result of the equipment he is playing on. Put him on slow nap cloth & i'm pretty sure he'd adjust.
