Ok so I think I am leaning towards shelling out more for the jump break cue which I only found out existed in the last hour LOL. They look cool, have great reviews, and makes this whole initial process simpler for me to not go around looking for hundreds of other break and jump cues.

I see these 2 on Amazon, very similar, so any opinions on differences, or just cosmetic? And even though they have good "ratings" if you think otherwise please feel free to tell me.

Players Billiard Pool Cue Stick - HXTP2

PureX HXT-P1 Black Quadruple Threat 4-Piece Technology

And I am thinking of getting the heaviest one, 21oz, because I think the heavier will smoothen out my stroke and allow me to get more power with less effort, but I heard differently from others here so one final input would be appreciated, thanks!

I have had 2 PureX..., they are great. Selling one of them now. They are not the best for jumping. But do pretty good. They do a excellent job of breaking. I was very happy with mine.

I would not recommend buying a combo cue. I would buy two different cues. One for jumping and one for breaking. The weight distribution needs to be different in the two cues. Thus a combo cue can't do that. Thus you end up with a substandard cue trying to save money. Spend a few more dollars and get the two cues optimized for each job. Your game deserves it.

LMAO get out, is this real? As in the free shaft they giving, it that a full 2 piece stick or.... I dont think I understand the proper lexicon yet (do I need to buy a butt end myself?), seems like way too good of a deal, and if so what kinda shaft is it, i.e., are ALL HXT exactly the same shaft?

Can I get something of comparable quality for around $200 with 2 separate purchases? Keep in mind, even though I have aspirations of getting better, maybe to a 5+ (APA rec rating thing) I have to be realistic in, for the next couple of years, will this equipment make that much of a different when I am playing at level 3-5? I think I would be much more willing to part with a break/jump stick than a player stick so I wont hesitate to upgrade later. But if this is trash, I understand, just seems like everyone loves it.

I thought it broke soft initially but then I put a Taom tip on it and it livened it up quite a bit. I am happy with mine and love the grip. Breaks and jumps nicely. I believe the tip is a very important part of the break/jump and you would be surprised how much it could change whatever cue you are using now. Before giving up on any cue I recommend a tip change whether it is a jump/break or a playing cue.

:sorry:

Spending that much for a jump break cue is just a waste of money.

But if you have it...go for it.

There is nothing wrong with breaking with the cue you play with.

There are good jump/break cues out there for $100 or less.

Can they put on the Taom tip when I order it? Like for this one I am looking at? (same model, just different store - thanks Kimmo) And I assume that tip is better for the breaks and jumps? I have no idea what tips matter for jumps.

Please dont take what I am going to say the wrong way. You aspire to be an apa 5 ? Set your goals a little higher my friend.

I fluctuate between a 5 and 6 now..I once thought like you did and I bought an Alex brick jump break. While I was able to jump successfully with it on occasion and I was a well made custom cue...as another poster said.....a jump break will break ok and jump ok it does not do either as well as a designated break or jump cue will.

I take it you play apa now since you aspire to be an apa 5..if not...my apology for reading your post wrong.

If you do play apa now...check with your lo about the legality of using a jump.break for jumping before you go out and buy one. It's kind of a gray area and although our lo.allows j/b's for jumping there is no yelling what your lo.allows.

My advice to you is to concentrate on kicking rather than jumping. Unless you are very proficient at jumping .....8 ball on a bar table allows no room for jumping.....unless most of the balls are already dropped. 9 ball on a bar table will give you a little room for jumping but I have found its hit or miss from one valley to the next.

Like.i.said...i am.a 5 and I have never seen no one ...and I mean no one ever attempt jump shots at any skill level in my area but me even though it is legal to do so.

I realized that mow of the time I could get out of situations better by kicking than jumping so I just went back to licking full time when shots required it.

Before I typed this statement I looked up my stats for the last 4 sessions in 9 ball.

4 sessions ago I made 3 - 9 on the snaps
3 sessions ago I made 3- 9 on the snaps

I then traded my Alex brick jump break to a guy even for a brand new predator bk 111

2 sessions ago I made 6 - 9 on th snaps
This session I have made 9 - 9 on the snaps and have a few weeks to go this session

My 9 ball.break sucks...especially for being a 5 but I am making 9 on the snaps a whole lot more frequently now with a pure break cue than I did with a custom.jump break.

My 8 ball break has always been decent no matter what cue i used to break with..

Hey lo, you bring up some very interesting points so I hope you dont mind my "thorough" response!

Ok so the goals... first no worries about telling me straight up, I'm not a teenager haha. To tell you the truth, I am one of those who, if he does anything, I want to do it 100% right and all the way, not sure if you got that gist from my OP. And if I were to be totally honest with you? Growing up I wanted to be a pro football/baseball player, then pro tennis in high school (I teach now), then pro golfer after college (I also teach this), (see the trend into less physical sports as I get older LOL) and now after tasting what I can do again on the table, I feel like pursuing a real career in pro pool but I know realistically I just dont have time. I think if I practice like I did golf, like 80 hrs/week, I can be at least a 9 in pool, I have no doubt, bec my defense ability is about a 7, my knowledge of 9 ball strategy and gameplay is at least a 9, but my ball striking/accuracy is a 2... which is what happens when you play once a year for 20 years... and my stance and positions still suck, nothing is really on line and I am working on it for the first time in my life. So I hope you weren't being too facetious with the "Set your goals a little higher" LOL, but I am just being realistic for the next several months.

I have a 6 and a 5 on my team, and they pocket balls better than me but I bank and play defense better than them. So as far as jumping, you are right, on these bar tables, I wont have much op to jump, but I do love jumping and even with a house cue, my jumping skill is about a 7 at least, and I use it a lot more when I play away from leagues, although honestly I've probably played about 20 jumps in my whole life but half of them were pretty darn good even by professional standards. Jump is allowed in my league but if you hit it wrong or come even close to fouling, they will let you have it so ya, very doubtful I will do it at any point, especially when I have 100% confidence in my bank game.

And all this isn't meant to be cocky or whatever, just trying to give you the facts so you have all the info and can understand me better so you can assist me better.

Now I understand this combo cue will not be great on the break as a dedicated cue. I guess for myself I just won't know until I get a big sample size, but I dont see that happening soon so maybe I will order it from Amazon first and "try" it and then also get a dedicated break cue and compare.

I apologize I have no idea what this is/means: :frown:

Thanks for your thorough response .:D

I am a sandbagging 5....or so I.have been told many times lol

Which means people think my level.of play is better than my handicap.indicates. My lo even said one match I had approached 7 territory. In that match I won 38-5 vs a 4 in 7 innings with 2 of those innings ending in safes.

The only reason this match went the way it did was because I was breaking like svb that night. Cant explain it. Every break...a ball or 2 fell and I had a decent shot on the next ball. My level of play was the same as it is every night.

Trying to be modest.. I probably do play more like a 7 but my break is more like a wimpy ass little old lady who is a 2 due to a disability on my shooting hand.

The part you did not understand. I was indicating that in previous sessions using a jump break cue I was making three 9 on the breaks a session. With the predator bk 111 I went six 9 on the breaks the next session and have nine 9 on the breaks this session with a couple of weeks left.

My break still sucks.for the most part but its obvious that switching to the predator has resulted I more 9 on the breaks.

Cue

I'm not sure if they are all the same..... but the last one someone brang in to have a tip put on it......
The tip was extremely mushroomed... the outer was leather with a carbon fiber rod in the center.... I'd pass'

Bahaha... well I get some "He's a 2???" comments as well... then I miss a 2 foot cut shot, or scratch because I thought I could underspin enough to prevent the scratch, and win only by like 4 balls and they quiet down... most times they suspect my level because as I said, I usually play defense like a pro because for some reason it excites me and I play them well LMAO... if we go to Vegas and the whole championship depended on me, I would probably play a defense shot more than 50% of the time because my ball making skills are so bad... meaning if I have a shot that I think is less than ~40% make, I'll just play defense and have a good chance at getting ball in hand LMAO, let alone have 0% chance of scratching. I know to some (esp in league play) its a bit, ummm, "suspect" but whatever, I play for me, not for my opponent, and they should to. I do what I do to have fun.

Well u keep winning like that I am not sure how you stay at 5 LMAO. I still lose once a while, and when I win I win by like 3-6 balls at most vs 2-4's. Not that I am deliberately missing shots but sometimes when "it doesnt matter" I try to pocket balls instead of the smarter defense.

Wait, r u talking about actually making the 9 on the break? Meaning you pocketed the "9 ball" nine times?

I think on a smaller table its different but when the pros play, the 9 hardly moves. I actually made a separate post about this, I have no clue how to calculate the best cue spot for a bar table in league play to pocket that 1 in side and get a corner ball and nice spread while leaving cue in the middle-ish.

Straightpool_99 saw this for me, any good? I think it looks like a great value, and if it is comparable or better than the one in the OP here, I'll just get this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/J-J-Natural-Birdseye-Maple-Jump-Break-Cue-W-Black-Phenolic-Tip-Ferrule-/282092198749?hash=item41ae015b5d:g:56MAAOSwEjFXfWiy&rmvSB=true

Those J&J models are good bargains for a break/jump cue, I have two of them and game one away to a raffle, one mine one for my son (and one was lost/stolen so I guess I owned 4). I was lucky enough to have won several of them in raffles and prizes for my son from junior tournaments and fundraisers, so only paid for one even though I owned 4 over time LOL

JMASTERJ...Heavier is not better. The break is about speed and timing...not brute force. You can move a lighter cue faster than a heavier cue. Many pros break with a lighter cue than they play with...you probably should too.

To me its not about just heavier is better, its because my assessment is I can shoot with a heavier stick more SLOWLY and still get the same energy into the ball, just physics, so my question is, why would anyone want to hit HARDER and faster with a lighter stick than a slower more high % stroke with a heavier? We all know as humans the faster/harder we do anything the worse we get in accuracy. So it would be most efficient to shoot a break with a heavier stick with the lowest velocity, since its not like we are focused on massive English.

I also heard that the tip (harder tip, like the phenol--- thingie) is more substantial than even the weight.

The Phenol-thingie is not always legal. So be careful with that. But Tip on your Jump/Break is very important.

I also use to think the same thing. I needed and liked a heavier cue for breaking. My PureX was 22 and could pound it. However some talked me in to trying a OB Rift which what like .5 oz more than my playing cue. I have been breaking so much better. Control and acceleration is all that matters.
