hello all,
i am buying a bob frey sneaky pete. it si going to have a white butt capp and a white joint, 1/2 inch on butt and 1/2 inch on shaft. with purpleheart wood and a striaght grain maple forearm. now the main question is to get an irish linen wrap or not, and if so what would go best with this wood for i have only see it in person once. i have seen purple with white spec and i thinks its horrible, i was wondering about white with purple spec, or wine with white spec. i am not sure, any have any ideas or pics of a cue with pourple heart with an irish linen? thanks

If you want it to remain a "sneaky" I would not have a wrap. I also feel that some wraps take away from the feel.

You'll love no wrap. With a linen wrap you actually have to grip the cue tighter (to hold on because the linen slips in your hand) and it kills some of your cueball action. I've gotten so use to no wrap that now if I hit a ball with a customers cue thats wrapped...I have to move my hand back until I get a couple of fingers on the clearcoat. With no wrap you can hold the cue with just barely a couple fingers (like Francisco) and it will stick in your hand allowing you to flick the cue and get increased action with your stroke. If I had to have a wrap...it'd be leather. Leather will allow the same loose stroke as no wrap.

Yes...I'll give credit where its due...Bob Meucci had it right clearing over the wrap. Most players when they compare both side by side, and see how much more loosely they can grip a non wrap cue...are sold. A firm grip kills cueball action for sure. A non wrap cue can be just barely held with the thumb and one finger...and I mean BARELY held...and draw the cueball the length of the table with ease. Trying that with linen shows how tight you must grip the linen to get it not to slip so that the cue actually moves forward with your stoke.
stix4sale...thats the biggest bumper I've ever seen in my life!!! Might be more appealing to the eye to recess it a bit into the buttcap...just my opinion...your customer may of wanted it that way.

this cue was originally set up with out the bumper, delrin butt. shorty asked for it to be added. meaning the bumper was an afterthought the day i was shipping it. yeah, i probably should have recessed it some.

Mike, are you sure you talking about a sneaky pete? I think your is a bit on the fancy side of a bar cue with the white butt cap, white joint collars and the white and green spotted irish linen wrap is more on the side of a plain jane four point?

When I think of a purpleheart sneaky pete. Or maybe I am wrong? Bugs.

Personally I prefer no wrap to linen, and leather to no wrap. I think the cue would look much better with no wrap than with a linen clear coated. However if that is what you really want, why don't you buy it without clear coating on the wrap and have somebody like stix4sale then put the clear coat on. I beg of you though, give serious thought to no wrap at all. Varney is right, you don't have to really grip the cue without a wrap because of the increased friction, therefore your wrist and hand is much looser and flexible.
JMHO.

Why not use a dark leather wrap, it would look good with the white buttcap and the white joint.

purpleheart cue

this is my personal playing cue
black leather wrap
this was only my second attempt at leather wrap:rolleyes:
not the greatest but i do like the feel and looks of it

Do not get a wrap. The wood is beutiful and a no wrap cue for me has a better feel. If you want more grip just get one of the rubber grips.

With all due respect, being "sneaky" with a purpleheart sneaky-pete, is hardly sneaky. It's supposed to look like a normal pool hall cue the sits on the wall. Purpleheart is no where near normal.

As far as the no wrap thing goes, if you like a no wrap cue, go for it. I personally can't stand it! I've played with a no wrap, meucci's painted over, wrap, and although it played well, in the back of my mind, I really didn't like it. It all depends on what you want, but between the no wrap and the paint over linen...go with the no wrap.

no wrap

thanks for all the replies. i am buying an sp not for the actual sp factor i hust wanted aplin classy lookiing well made cue, thus i added a joint. i think i am going to go wiht no wrap cause i have shot with meucci my hwole life and i lovehaveing no wrap. i was only getting one for looks but i am going to keep it clean. i will post pics when i get them. thanks

Do what YOU prefer Mike. Personally I'd rather not have the linnen wrap on a sneaky pete. But for only $10 you can order a Bob Frey sneaky with a Rambo Ring above the buttcapp. Would be a nice touch IMO.

Could care less if a sneaky pete is not sneaky. What moron do you think you're foolin with a plain sneaky? Plastic over a linnen wrap is ICKY.
