Purpleheart forearms no good?

I read on easypooltutor forum that a purpleheart is not so suitable as the base material in the forearm due to its brittle nature. I've been sleeping on a prurpleheart forearm design for the longest time! I'm also wondering what the consequences of using purpleheart as a forearm are. Like is it gonna crack if I miss-cue? Or is it gonna split if the cue falls over? Cue and wood gurus please enlighten me! :)
Thanks!

Purpleheart is an excellent wood for cues. Very stable and plays good too. Anyone that would say that purpleheart is no good is clueless.

I agree with Ted. I use Purpleheart quite often for cues. It makes a great hitting cue, IMHO !

O that's reassuring

That is great news for me! Very reassuring to have professionals tell me such a design will work fine, cuz I've worked pretty hard on this one. I wasn't gonna post any pics of what I had in mind cuz I'm afraid if I do so the cue wouldn't be unique anymore, but I think I should share:

What dya guys think? Purpleheart forearm and butt, leather wrap, a,b,c,d bocote rings, and a Tad-esque green/white dash e ring. It's got no pin cuz I'm thinking about having Layani make this cue. Please Please keep this cue design unique for me!
Thanks! ;)

Very nice design. What did you use to design that cue? I would love to start designing some cues that I'd like to have built if I could get them that nice. Thanks in advance for your info!

Thanks for the compliments! Very flattering! :)
Zack, I used photoshop to do that picture. A lot of masking and clone-stamping, and a lot of time, but I just love making things look nice!

Years ago when Jerry Franklin started out in Las Vegas, I was fortunate enough to get hold of several of his cues (I lived in Phoenix - and that is just hop skip and jump from Vegas). One of the most elegant cues and attention getting cues I got from him was a simple cue with purple heart forearm and butt. (I don't think he had problem with purple heart forearms) As soon as I saw your cue design, I couldn't help but think of that cue. Its a very nice design, have it made!

Thanks John, again, very flattering comments! :)
I sure will get this cue made, but probably not until summer break (I'm still in university) when I can work some more to pay for it. Glad you guys like how it looks. When the real thing is delivered to my door I'll be sure to post some pictures.

Hi Tim,
Idle talk is cheap. Some folks in the pool room are experts on any subject. As my friend Ted Harris said, They are "CLUELESS"...most who say this woods no good and that one is, are not cuemakers. Just consider who's giving you advice.
Remember, TALK IS CHEAP-O......

Roger that blud, good advice. There are a bunch of professionals here at Az sharing reliable info and that's the reason I'm always on Az looking through these posts till my eyes are shot ! I'm so grateful for the free lessons here at Az.
Thanks everyone.

Yep, many good and wise people here. Also, if someone posts misleading info about anything, there are many people to straighten out the facts...

Hey timbo....i love your design there. I just wanted to ask what program you used in making that design....it sure looks awesome. I'm at awe since you even have the lighting right & the shadows even. I just do my designs with powerpoint and maybe you can enlighten a computer newbie just like me. Thanks :)

Tim,

Cue looks great. Purpleheart is actually more durable and crush resistant than straight maple. They used to use it for commercial truck beds.

Chris

Wow, Chris, I did not know that! Those must've been some nice lookin' truck beds! ;)

Thanks to everyone for the kind words, glad you're all liking the design! I'll see what my next cue design inspiration brings, hope you guys will like that one too ;)

I once read in a book on woods that one of the main uses of Purple Heart world wide is in "pool cue handles." Now if it made that statement in an non-pool related book about woods from around the world I think that says enough. And as someone who has built many purple heart cues you were misinformed. I have built purple heart shafts and they play really stiff and yes if you whack them on the side they may break. Sounds like someone confused forearm and shaft when initially starting this rumor and then confused abuse with normal play.
